Hodinkee offer: No import duties or customs charges

Had an email earlier, limited time offer for any new watches (not vintage) from their shop, excluding anything with an exotic leather strap

How can they say that, bring a watch in from the US and 20% vat plus couriers handling fees are due. They could of course offer a discount equivalent to the VAT that would be charged. UK car dealers have made similar offers.

I would read the small print before buying.

Might just order that SBGZ003 from them, and save £8k.

That might be the case, but also given that Hodinkee is a web based business their location can change to be one place or multiple places. They may have established European or UK division like Apple and many other businesses have.

Surely all that matters to C&E is where an item ships from?

It is possible to send goods from America with duty prepaid.

They'll probably use a 3rd party to process the customs fees, like Pitney Bowes and the eBay Global Shipping Programme.

Is there a code or something?

I still think ultimately the VAT will be paid, the price of the watch will be discounted to the buyer so the net cost is the same as if it was VAT free.

Instead of having an opinion, why not just read the small print? There aren't any prizes for guessing right

The law is the law and goods coming from the US attract VAT - end of. They will cover it for you, which is what I said. No opinion, just fact old bean.

Is this the small print? It still tells us nothing.

Do I retrospectively claim the VAT back? Is it all sorted at source so I just sit back and await delivery?

Have you read the small print? What does it say?

Hodinkee offer: No import duties or customs charges

That says they’ll pay the duty (negligible). No mention of tax (VAT) @ 20%.

It's possible to ship and all fees be born by the shipper.
We used to order from the states for a customer in Greece and we would know the landed cost to us as soon as we checked out, I think it was using UPS.

Amazon USA has a similar option: duties paid up front so no surprises. This can then be discounted as amount is known on payment.

Does not apply on applicable freight charges
this part is interesting. Import duties, if memory serves me right, are calculated on the value of goods, which is manufacturer price+shipping charges. VAT then goes on top of that.
