The merchant will usually ask for a secondary source of funds, having recalculated the sum
Or its just "computer says no"
I have received a pre-paid Mastercard (it's actually an e-card rather than physical). How does it work if I want to purchase something that costs more than the funds loaded on the card?

I don't think you can
Online, unless customer services can help, I think it’s difficult. In person, most stores will be happy to charge two cards to make up the total bill. Did it at Currys a while ago.
I had one recently and found I couldn't part pay online. In the end, I waited and used it on an order that matched my balance.
Silly question perhaps judging by some of the other responses but do you not have a facility to either top up this card or transfer the balance to another card?
I've had these cards from work, raffle prizes etc, and I usually end up using them to buy credit at amazon. Perhaps you could buy a gift voucher for whichever place you want to buy from?
Just had some of these from work. I put them into PayPal one at a time and sent the money to my wife. She then sent it back to me via bank transfer. Best possible way to use them.
