Thread: Nose bleeds?

    Nose bleeds?

Anybody else ever had problems with nose bleeds? I know it’s not the worst thing that could ever happen but I’ve had 7 in the past two weeks and getting to be a real inconvenience. Doesn’t seem to be any patten to them, last night I woke at 11.00 with one and now as I type I’m sat with a roll of tissue up my nose. I’ve written off two work shirts and a pillow case because the blood stained, usually last 15-20 minutes and at a guess about a cup full of blood. Managed to get a doctors appointment later today after 25 minutes of dial, hang up and re-dial! So hopefully I’ll know why later.

    But anybody else suffer?

Could be high blood pressure so you definitely need to see the doctor.

I had a nose bleed problem in my youth and ended up having a vein in my nose cauterised.

Its unlikely to have anything to do with high blood pressure.

Maybe you picked it in your sleep and have caused a cut or trauma, the nose bleeds ver dramatically but its usually harmless.

Its winter you might be sat in an office with the heating on and dry air making your nose more susceptible to damage.

Unless it starts without warning and doesn’t stop for a long time ( more than 5-10mins) then its unlikely you’ll have anything going on to worry about.

If you are on blood thinners or aspirin that may also play a role but again unlikely and you would probably be aware.

By all means get it checked but I’d suggest you don’t worry about it in the meantime.

Soaking the shirts in a cold soda solution might shift the stain.

You're not taking Accutane are you?
I had severe acne on my back in my teens (hereditary) and was prescribed Roaccutane. Not only did it put me into a deep depression, it also gave me a nose bleed at random times throughout the day and night.

Thanks guys, just to add, I’m on no medication, no trauma to nose, I’ve had them in bed, in shower in car and while watching tv so no apparent link to temperature or air condition.

Will try soaking the shirts 😉

Sudden onset of recurring nosebleeds...see a doctor.

Possible causes are unlikely to be determined on an internet forum...only your GP can set your mind at rest if the cause is medical, or not (eg mechanical).

I used to get them at night and when it was hot, they cauterised the blood vessels, it is like having a soldering iron shoved up your nose, they said the cause was thin blood vessels

Pretty much the same for me, although the doctor used a form of acid? Pretty painless and cured easily.

My son has them regularly. Once he has one we know he will have a few more as it takes time to heal. Then it will be ok for a while until he gets a new series. Vaseline in the nose can help as it is a hard place to heal properly and it moves more than you may think while breathing, sneezing etc.

When in doubt go see a doctor but maybe this helps with the inconvenience.

Could be low humidity causing it, it used to happen to me when the central heating went on in the office I then worked in. Columbian marching powder is another cause.

My son too recently. He never cleans his bedroom, as a result it gets dusty, he sneezes, blows his nose hard like a trumpet and gets nosebleeds! He’s been to to the doctor a few times now, recently started at university and the nosebleeds are settling down. Adds to his washing though!

Growing up as a kid and young adult in Canada I played a lot of ice hockey and as such had a fairly respectable broken nose. I used to get nose bleeds all the time particularly in the spring when my hay fever would act up... but it sometimes seemed random as it would just happen. When my career ended I had my nose fixed so I could breathe. Haven’t had a bloody nose since!

Perhaps rugby injuries or how ever else people break their noses... no idea but if it’s happened perhaps it’s still the deviated septum that’s causing it as mine was.

Like others said could be high blood pressure and if so not good. Happened to a friend of mine he ended up in the hospital and the doctors put him on meds. He decided he didn't need them and a month later he was dead mid forties with wife and kids bad overall ending because he wouldn't take the pills.

If it continues for more than a couple weeks, I would see my GP and they may refer you to a local ENT specialist.

There are many types of cauterisation if required, laser, chemical and heat. Some GPs can use the chemical local cauterisation if necessary.

You haven’t mentioned how old you are? As mentioned any slight trauma could cause a bleed.

If it’s as a result of the lining drying out (crusty) you could apply a thin coat of Vaseline using a cotton ear bud, this will prevent the lining from drying out and cracking causing bleeds.

    Merry Christmas! Lol.

So update, doctor checked blood, heart, and nose and couldn’t see anything wrong so revered to ENT at hospital, now waiting for an appointment.

Good news is I went to see Billy Bragg gig last night and no nose bleed so that was a result.

    Justin,

I had the same problem a few years ago.

Turns out It was caused by a polyp up my nose which was shrunken with a prescribed nasal spray.

    Been fine ever since.

Could well be the same for you.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

Had them all my life. Just start for no reason. Must have had my nose cauterised about 6 times. It only lasts a few years for me then needs done again. I have had both the sulphur stick and the electrolysis type. Neither lasts. One time there were about 6 students in the room and the doctor asked them all to have a good look at mine after he put up the spray. Said inside my nose lit up like an aerial view of a busy road network at night. Apparently I just have veins close to the surface of the inside of my nose.

Have suffered with bleeds on and off for nearly 30 years. Blood pressure checked regularly and is fine. Mine will generally start as a result of over enthusiastic nose blowing but have had them start for no reason out of the blue. I tend to have bleeds over a period of 6-10 days and then they pass.

I tend to find that they regularly happen in autumn or winter when I have a cold or when I’m abroad in hot weather. More of an inconvenience than anything.

This reminds me of a science lesson years ago when I was about 16. Teacher says ‘right, I’m going to soak this piece of cotton wool in Ammonia and waft it under each of your noses in turn. Those boys in the Rugby team, get a hankie at the ready as you will get a nosebleed’ - sure enough, we all did! - can’t imagine that happening in snowflake health and safety 2019, we all thought it was brilliant at the time!

As a bearded chap, I can’t decide whether your moustache made nosebleeds better or worse!

I use to have nosebleeds regularly due to thin vessels in my nose. Quite a few times I ended up in hospital as my nose would just bleed for over an hour.
Someone in the hospital once told me to pinch just above your nostrils for a few minutes which always stops my nose from bleeding. When I could, I'd then apply Vaseline to aid recover.

During the winter, to avoid irritation i usually leave a bowl of water by the radiator to add some moisture to the air. I've also had a rhinoplasty due to a deviated septum which is not fun, especially when your 1yr old kicks you in the nose every other day!

Sudden onset of nosebleeds should be investigated - if you had them on and off for years - consider cauterization.

i had nosebleeds in my youth nearly all the time - on and off - Some for a couple of hours -allergy related and I used to pick my nose a lot - now not sure if related or I just out grew them but found out I had an overactive thyroid and once that was sorted the nosebleeds never came back - like may still get the odd small 5 minute one in a warm shopping centre trip but that's it.

My two sons get them often too - usually go with bouts of hayfever (march-may & Sept-nov) and the rest of the year they're ok

Well three weeks on and still having nose bleeds, was due in doctors for a blood test Wednesday and still waiting for appointment at ENT, yesterday was crazy 5 bleeds that just wouldn’t stop, so 111 recommended I go to A&E. it was surprisingly quiet for a Saturday night in December, saw triage nurse, then on duty doctor then they actually had a ENT specialist on call, following a 20 minute conversation on his new 75” tv he cauterised a small blood vessel in my nose. The procedure was as you’ve all said except he sprayed a topical anaesthetic that stung like hell then he basically gave me a chemical burn inside my nose, didn’t feel a thing until this morning and my nose feels like someone has stuck a hot poker up it.

But that aside all good, said I could expect a few more bleeds but that should have fixed it.

So two more weeks and I’ll be able to use my new pillow and pillow case.

    Thanks for all your comments.

Growing up bloodstained pillow cases were the norm... fond memories of waking up to a rusty iron rich smell, having had a nosebleed not noticed and slept through it
