MR16 lamp connector question for an electrician

    Hi

I have some MR16 low voltage lamps some with suspect connectors.

    https://www.toolstation.com/spare-lampholder/p99286

I have found these replacements which look the jobby but I cannot get to the transformer from the top or underneath to unplug the old and push in the new wires. So I am thinking of about cutting the old connector off, as close to the holder as poss, and then connecting the replacement to the cut ends with something like a Wago connector. Would there be any issue with doing this?

The issue may be where along the line the holder has failed. We have a bunch of these lights in our house and Iver the years I’ve had to replace quite a few of the holders as the transformer was fine as was the bulb - it was just the lamp holder that had failed.
Having said that, I think the majority fail where the bulb is inserted as sometimes messing about with exactly how the bulb was inserted would make the light work for a while. In which case you should be ok to simply cut the old one and connect the new one into the remains.

It should be fine. Wago do a lighting junction box & terminals for just such applications:

If you don't need 100 connectors then Amazon have smaller quantities.

Why don’t you do away with the transformers all together. And get some mains lampholders

Unless in a wet location, I would do this.

Decent quality mains LED one's are pretty cheap these days.

I would not mess around - bin the transformers.

The temperature in a MR16 lamp housing can exceed 300°f , which is why the sockets use a ceramic insulator. If you use a wiring splice, it also needs to be of a high temperature type.

The best MR16 LED replacement lamps I have tried are the Soraa 00931 and 00943, and I've tried them all.

Quick question - what's the best way to change from MR16 to mains LED ones from a wiring perspective? We have loads of MR16 lamps and I keep meaning to change them for LEDs.
What are the connections on the ones you posted about?

Need to take the 12 v transformers out the circuit and change the lamp holder if you want to keep the current down lights. Or change the whole fitting for a led 240v down light
Gu10 lamp holders only are about £1.50

One thing to be aware of is that line voltage LED drivers often react with in wall dimmers poorly. It may be much simpler to replace the lamps with LED MR16 equivalents.

The problem with just trying to change rhe pls halogen 12v lamps to led mr16 lamps is that older type 12v transformers won’t work with led lamps

That depends entirely on the MR16 replacement lamps you choose. There are vendors that make replacements that work with electronic transformers, just not all of them do.
