My job can be a bit random - today’s efforts involved watches!

To cut a long, random story short my work involves metal. Precious metal mainly. Today I gave a presentation at one of Switzerland’s biggest refineries and, much to my surprise, they offered me a tour of the whole refinery.

What a great experience. Millions of dollars worth of precious metals sat around in various states, but carefully tracked by bespoke systems. The levels of automation were also quite a surprise...

However the highlight was the semi-finished products section. Rose gold deployants and 18k gold bracelet links were on today’s production roster and I scooped up a handful of the latter, smiling at the thought of Haywood doing likewise with the finished product.

That was my random work day. Anyone else get up to something a bit different?

Not much happens in a tyre fitting bay to be honest.

However, I've got an old Ferrari coming in on Thursday for a set so that'll break the day up.

Not sure what model yet but it's got knock on hubs.

Copper or lead mallet time then!

In another (much younger) life I did the same job for a while. Culminated in 24 hour commercial breakdowns (mostly on the motorways), and earthmover work. Money was good on call, but a tad dangerous at times. Decided office mechanics was safer!
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

I do a fair few classics. I have a copper hide hammer but prefer the newer style rubber covered dead-blow hammers. No risk of marking the spinners and they don't bounce off!

Had a couple of days of northerly winds here so took the opportunity to do a couple of subsea grout repairs on the legs under Brighton pier.

My job can be a bit random - today’s efforts involved watches!

Spent the last week in France at a conference and customer visits.

Gala dinner & the release of the Beaujolais Nouveau made for quite a pleasant week.

Also discovered that Côte-Rôtie is delicious ...

Côte Rôtie is probably France’s greatest mostly unknown wine. In my mind it stands its own with the greatest Burgundy wines.

Really ?? Against a good Gevrey Chambertin ?

Being a proselyte of the Kimmeridgian soils myself I would appreciate a recommendation from your good self for me to try. I occasionaly drift towards Burgundy's smooth reds.

I have access to majestic and some independents and errr nothing above £40 for trywines.

    TIA

Indeed Brian, I had in mind higher Burgundies, up to -dare I say it? - the Romanée Conti.

Of course it is impossible to compare the pinot noir and a Syrah/Viognier mix.

Unfortunately, as is often the case the best can be a touch on the (very) dear side.

I would recommend you start with a Côte Blonde, from the southern part of the appellation. My favourite is E Guigal ‘La Mouline’ but it will be way off your budget.
I am happy if I get to drink one in the year, though. Well within budget you may want to try this one:

(Sorry for the cling film, it protects the label when the cellar is a bit damp)

Thanks for this I'll give that a try.

My local man (well 50m away) has phoned to say that he a couple in stock which I am sure that I will get for a price.

My majestic chap has this :Guigal Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde 2015 - worth a try ?

...and BTW I have never even tried a Romani conti - It's grim up north y'know.

I tend not to be a fan of once a year wines - I have to say they are a bit like once a year women - rather expensive and most of the time unpredictable. I like a weekly slosh tbh. :-)

I’m no expert - but that’s the one I tried & enjoyed it very much.

If it has Guigal on the label it’s usually worth trying. And just to be clear, Romanée Conti was twice in my lifetime. And I wasn’t the one who bought them.
