    I agree, makes far more sense than giving them a new watch that's 21 years old and hoping they like it. My father had a 1950s Roamer that I remember him wearing when I was a kid, unfortunately he lost it in the late 70s. I can still remember that watch, I recall trying it on as a youngster and playing with it, that would've had some real meaning to me.

    From a financial point of view probably the gold is a safer bet.

    But if the purpose of the buy is to mark a special event with an object bought on the same month and year that that event occurred, the financial part of thing shouldn't be the driver and the watch actually makes sense, although it has all the risks already stated on this thread.

    Im another one for the ‘wear it and if they like it they can have it’ approach. I don’t understand my wife’s taste in watches etc so wouldn’t back myself to choose something for a child that’s fit for purpose in 18 years time!
