Seems like a weird mod to do, and certainly doesn't improve anything to my eyes.
Just to add it is someone taking a Sub case and building a watch using Seiko parts.

The Seiko modding world is awash with these watches. Crystaltimes make the cases. Some of them are stunning and I must admit I’m tempted.
Will I need to join a waiting list at the AD?

Is there a particular watch maker that specialises in these, or do you find a willing watch maker and give him your specs?

I don't but a very quick look at the Crystaltimes website suggests:
Case 100
Caseback 22
NH35a 67
Bezel 30
Insert 15
Crystal 40
That's $274 (£215) and you still need a dial, hands, crown and stem assembly and someone to build it so add at least £200 to that. I'd budget for £500. Sometimes they come up for sale on the FB page for less than that.
So basically a sbdx017 marine master in a rolex style case , tbh it loses the appeal of the marine masters mono bloc case
Apart from the fact that the dial and hands are fake and the movement bottom of the heap. Let's be clear. The watches pictured in this thread are complete and utter crap.

I know it's not for everyone, but I like the whole Seiko modding subculture. It's a way for people to configure and reconfigure until they get the look and specs they really want.
I've no problem with modding - I've done it myself - but the only Seiko component in the watch featured in the opening post is probably the movement. The dial is a flat out fake, the hands, I don't know, but probably third party, and the case looks like your standard sub-alike generic case used in all sorts of applications, some of which would at the very least cause furrowed brows on watch forums such as this.
There is a thriving cottage industry in the production of parts to satisfy the modding itch, many of which excellent quality but in my opinion, as soon as you apply a brand name to a third party part, that part becomes fake.

I wouldn't be able to spot a fake part if it hit me in the face. Surely it wouldn't cost much more to use original parts anyway. I understand that Cousins sell Seiko dials for about £29. Anyway, this thread has reawakened my interest in watches which has been waning recently. I think I may dip a toe and maybe even a whole foot into the world of modding.

I would agree, but people do need to go in with their eyes open. I've had a few that were Fifty Five Fathoms modifications and looked fantastic, but an absolute nightmare to sell on if you come to flip. Ideal for those who can do these things themselves and return the watch back to its original state if it's time to let go.
That depends on the model you are trying to emulate. A genuine SBDX017 Marinemaster dial might cost you anywhere between £150 and £400 depending on where you try to source it from whereas one of those South East Asia eBay specials that ape the Marinemaster look might cost about £30.
Your general point about the appeal of customising your own watch though is a good one. Just don't expect anyone else to feel the same way about it when it comes to moving it on!

Atleast they're all lined up...
