What could be better? Watches and explorers! Could only be improved on if the explorers were on motorbikes.
I’ll be going, if anyone else is and would like to meet up let me know,

I seem to have missed this initially! This is very much up my street too. Let me firm up a few things on my agenda and see if I can make it.
Shame - I'm double booked next Monday at that time, else would have come along - it sounds fascinating!
I also would have liked to have gone, but at least I can add the book to my shopping list for when it comes out next year.
Thanks for posting.
Unfortunately I will be attending a funeral that day. A great topic though.

It was a splendid afternoon amongst great company, thanks to berin and crazyp. Peter Burt wove tales of the watches and travellers (not explorers) who made use them into a most interesting narrative. We also had a chat with Professor Joe Smith, the engaging director of both the RGS and clockmakers Smith of Derby Ltd.
A very interesting afternoon, visiting the RGS is always a pleasure buts it’s not often watches are the subject matter.
I had a very enlightening discussion with David Penney on how the watches were made, with the retailers name on the front but the watch actually made from components made by individual artisans, and the demise of the English watch making industry which led the world for 200 years until WW2
Fantastic! Really interesting and thanks for sharing!

I really wish I could have made it. What's the best way to be notified that Burt's book has been published next year? Did they give any clue as to who the publisher is?
In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.
