I have a standard SBDW005, very interesting watch - tech and design wise. How does the ceramic one wear, I had pondered one before. I can't say I like the shiny bracelet, I'm afraid... :)

There’s a history here, including the source of the name, although it’s not that easy to follow. Basically it’s a kind of competition grade grail watch that just happened to cross my path at the right moment.

I have to say the bracelet is growing on me. I normally wear it on a Seiko canvas strap but felt like a change and popped it on the bracelet. It feels solid but not heavy. My only gripe is that the clasp and ratcheting mechanism is titanium like the SBDW005. I can see why they’ve opted to do that but it’s a very abrupt departure from the look and feel of the ceramic. The watch itself is just a toolish marvel otherwise and I’m in awe of the fine details etched into the ceramic bezel.

It is most likely a wrist conversion from a pocket watch executed in Ukraine (and there are many that get this treatment and are given military of flight-related features when converted).
The dial has the Helvetia swirl, for a start, posiitoned to balance a sub-second that should be at 6 on the pocket watch. It also has faux lume on the numerals (tried it under UV?) but none on the hands, is way too big for a wristwatch of this era, has the distinctive soldered on fancy lugs that the Ukrainians like to use and a Junghans signature that is rarely seen off a movement, unless on the dial of a pocket watch.
    Sorry
    D
No need to be sorry, it's interesting info, and I've nothing invested emotionally (and peanuts financially) in it.

The person I bought it from was also convinced it was a pocket-watch conversion, but when I searched online there were a handful of other examples broadly similar to this, some with flyer type detail, some not (of course all could be Ukrainian efforts!), which along with the fact the lugs on this are precise and have no sign of solder or weld, the patination/corrosion of the metal matches the case, and every part inside-and-out is similarly dusty, grimy and corroded I was prepared to take a chance on it. Seems a lot of effort to fake a still-not-very-valuable watch, but hey, perhaps so.

It also strikes me that makers wanting to jump-on an early flying-popularity bandwagon might well hastily modify pocket watch production to provide cheap, large flyers (and ultimately this is a cheap watch). I don't have a blacklight so can't see if the numerals fluoresce, but there's no lumpy added lume. Only upside there, is at least I won't get a wrist tumour from wearing it!

I've seen a few Connies on the forum, but none like this octagonal one, (so far).

I reckon this is the only one on here, a 70's Mithras Sea Hunter. 35mm plated case and plastic bezel.

And here, a Salvest (a German clockmaker if my research is correct) manual wind. Quite a pleasant little 35mm dress/vintage wear, here on a TF Rallye strap

And finally, for a bit of fun, an Athletic Works digital. I bought this from Walmart for $12 back in 2008 as a running watch as it has a large, easy to read display. I now run wearing a Garmin but I still wear this one for rugby coaching.

    That's really nice.

I have an Olympic too, but a much later TAG cased quartz diver.

Come to think of it I haven't seen one on the forum before.

    Cheers,

Of these 4 I'd say the UG only has another owner on the forum (Mark020 I believe)

The Montiler is the most elusive but I'm pleased to say that I now have a spare. I certainly believe I'm the only person to have the set and, goodness knows, it took me long enough.
    In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.

Easy! Here's two (2!) Smiths "Mk X" made in Cheltenham in WW2 for the RAF

Case is a Dennison 13322, fixed bars

Movement is a forerunner of the Smiths "1215" (12''' and 15 jewels) with a 13''' baseplate and hole for centre seconds (as was the original intention)

I believe that 11 of these are known to exist: 9 subseconds, 2 centre seconds. Two are marked (i.e. issue engravings, 6B xxxx/42 for 1942)

    Cheers!

Lovely watch shame about the lug removal

It was my grandfather's... he was a Lancaster pilot in WW2 but we have no idea how he came across it.
My mother remembers it sitting in a stand and being used as a travel clock. I assume my grandfather butchered it for this purpose.

I have had the movement serviced and it's now in working condition. I could have the lugs re-made, but I wouldn't wear it anyway... 55mm is just a bit too big.

I have seen a few like this (an original BUhr is on the want list)
It’s always been a mystery why the lugs were removed.
Still it’s an important bit of family history so perfect as it is. The dial and hands look especially good.
    Thanks for sharing
