Sending final respects to Alexei Leonov, pioneer of space exploration. First ever (almost disastrous) spacewalk, commander of Soyuz-Apollo, erudite, artistic, flightmaster and Strela column-wheel-chronograph wearing personal hero.
Pioneer. Watched him recently on NASA's unexamined files. Superb TV show.

A true space pioneer and a real character, by all accounts
Lots more footage of him in this BBC documentary Cosmonauts: How Russia Won the Space Race.
Well worth watching (assuming the Beeb do another re-run on iPlayer).
R.I.P. Alexei.
Yes a real hero and a great man. He is name checked in several Arthur C. Clarke novels.
When I was googling images a few years back (searching on French astronaut, Michel Tognini at the time), still looking for more photos of cosmonauts wearing their Yema Spationaute III's, I was disappointed to see how badly Getty Images had captioned this photo of Russia's elder spaceman.
Jean-Pierre Haignere (left), Michel Tognini, and another cosmonaut sit together in Zvezdniy Gorodok (Star City), Russia. The French astronauts are training for the Antares space mission, a joint endeavor with Russian cosmonauts scheduled for the summer of 1992. (Photo by Alain Nogues/Sygma/Sygma via Getty Images)
