It would be an Omega SMP 300 if it was my choice.

Is he unable do do his own research? I.e walk into some watch shops? Sorry if I'm cynical but if budget seems to be the only determining factor, then the individual probably doesn't care what watch they end up with, just the image it conveys.
Tell him to go into some shops and buy a watch he likes.
With a budget of £4K I would get a BB58 and keep the change.
Not so much that, he asked me for any suggestions outside of the high street options because I have an interest and he doesn't want to buy badly.
He doesn't know what's out there, what's a good financial bet or what value he can get if he goes used. I'm sure I don't know all the options either so thought I'd ask the room.
He will decide what he likes but asked me for help on the stuff to look at or avoid. Being equally cynical he could end up buying something crap if uninformed (TAG Carrera instantly jumps to mind).
There was a time when I started out where I knew nothing outside of Rolex, Omega, Rotary and Seiko.
Some good options here thanks folks.
I think a shortlist of these would be worth seeing.
New
Rolex OP
Tudor BB58 or the new black pvd chrono
Seamaster 300
Used
Globemaster
Defy classic
JLC Squadra hometime
We are in central London so a think a lunchtime expedition to watchfinder is needed!
Great choice, they are a great watch.

Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.
The PAM 590 currently on SC looks like a good option to me.

Buy a used Longines for a few hundred and blow the rest on women and booze
What about a Tudor Chrono, blue dial?
I can’t relate to this way of buying a new watch at all.
I’d enjoy the watch I have until I see another watch that would either compliment or replace my existing watch. Then I would buy it.
I can see the merit in asking for suggestions of a £4000 alternative to one you’ve seen but can’t afford or a particular style eg a regulator, but not just a list of £4000 watches
Just type automatic watch into search on eBay - then apply filter to narrow price band to £3900-£4100. Works well to give ideas.
The Speedmaster was my 1st decent watch, what I bought next was a grand taille reverso. I still have both and I like them very much, thus, I would propose the same for your friend. No idea where is the reverso nowadays price-wise but I bet if not new, at least 2nd hand would be within the proposed maximum (I bought mine for 3950 GBP, for Xmas 2017, from Berrys during sales).
Best of luck,
Evangelos
What about some iwc...
Iwc Portuguese used can be had for around this budget or a new pilots petit prince.
What about titanium panerai with sandwich dial? Early tobacco dial 562/564 have sandwich dial, otherwise older 176/177,though the black dial might be a bit too repetitive for the collection
At one point I had brown speedy and pam 177 combo...
I think you are missing our point. You would get far more information about what is generally available for £4K from one trip to Selfridges or Watches of Switzerland than all the suggestions you’ll get for a ‘blank canvas’ list of requirements thread like this.
What forum threads similar to this are good for is when you have an idea of the kind of watch you like but want for example a cheaper alternative to something you’ve seen but can’t afford...example ‘my mate’s been looking for something to compliment his moonwatch and on a trip to London he saw a JLC Moon Ultra Thin he really like but his budget is nearer £4K, any suggestions?’ Then someone will say...yep Montblanc make one, and then someone else will pipe up ‘Fredrique Constant make that kind of thing with a hint of Patek style font’ and that’s how you find out what’s out there
Your opinion is your opinion, but people are allowed to ask the room for advice. How much is upto them.
My first proper watch was a brietling wings. If I knew more I'd have definitely bought something else but I didn't know what else was around, and still don't.
WOS and Selfridges don't stock anywhere near the range of brands out there so to say stick to them is pretty poor advice.
My advice to you is skip these threads so they don't wind you up.
Let's not argue though, lots of great pieces to start with have been suggested to the thread has done its job well.

Yep, most of which you would’ve seen in a trip to a Watches of Switzerland or Selfridges.
But I agree that looking in a couple of decent shops to see which kind of style or brand of watch you may like is poor advice if what you really want to know is which £4K watch will impress the most people.
Surely you have better things to do than troll a thread you don't want to read.
It's not about impressing people, if you want that then do your trick of walking in to the nearest WOS and buying the first piece in the window because people will love those known brands.
It's about knowing what's out there beyond the high street, and asking people for advice on what's out there, nor telling you what to buy. If you don't get it then fair enough mate.
I’m not trolling, I’m simply saying that I discover which watch I might want to buy by looking in shops, two shops in your area that have a lot of choice is WOS and Selfridges, nobody has suggested they sell all the watches/brands you can buy or would want, they don’t even sell the whole range of the brands they carry.
I’m saying at this very early stage of you not knowing even what style of watch (sports or dress) you have a look round a decent shop get an idea of what you might like, then have a look on the brand’s website to see what variations of those watches are available but aren’t on sale at that particular shop.
Virtually all the suggestions so far are the usual suspects...a Rolex OP 39 and a Seamaster would be exactly what I would’ve suggested if I hadn’t set out to actually give you some buying advice first.

With a 4k budget to go with a speedmaster for me it has to be a planet ocean, newer model 8900 movement to cover the sports/dive watch, Or dressier watch something from panerai? Or even IWC for a fliger.. suppose it all depends on taste and what they want to use it for?
