36mm DJ. Pref 116234 white dial with Romans on jubilee but that may be just out of budget.

If your mate decides to go with the OP39mm white, drop me a pm. Am considering selling it.

With a budget of £4K I would get a BB58 and keep the change.

For a first watch I think a BB58 is a great shout. Keep the change and save up for the white dial Rolex OP39.

What about a Tudor Chrono, blue dial?

I can’t relate to this way of buying a new watch at all.

I’d enjoy the watch I have until I see another watch that would either compliment or replace my existing watch. Then I would buy it.
I can see the merit in asking for suggestions of a £4000 alternative to one you’ve seen but can’t afford or a particular style eg a regulator, but not just a list of £4000 watches

    Absolutely
Totally ridiculous way to approach things
I can never understand these threads- I have x number of $. What should I buy?

I also wonder about people who offer suggestions in response.

That's your mistake. No one is asking what you should buy, but what you could buy.

Otherwise you never know what's out there (unless your conceited enough to think you know every watch in the world).

Add used market in and it's even more complex.

We need a few 'Stickies' - What to buy for £xxxx?

Recent threads for £300, £1000, £1500 and £4000. Need to fill in the gaps.

Exactly, (although do I detect a hint of sarcasm😉). What's the point of a watch enthusiast forum if people can't ask for advice on a range of watches for a certain price. Surely its best asking on here first to get a good idea of watches that are actually worth their price before jumping in and buying something that's not. Or maybe I've got the wrong idea about this?

Just type automatic watch into search on eBay - then apply filter to narrow price band to £3900-£4100. Works well to give ideas.

The Speedmaster was my 1st decent watch, what I bought next was a grand taille reverso. I still have both and I like them very much, thus, I would propose the same for your friend. No idea where is the reverso nowadays price-wise but I bet if not new, at least 2nd hand would be within the proposed maximum (I bought mine for 3950 GBP, for Xmas 2017, from Berrys during sales).

    Best of luck,
    Evangelos

What about titanium panerai with sandwich dial? Early tobacco dial 562/564 have sandwich dial, otherwise older 176/177,though the black dial might be a bit too repetitive for the collection

At one point I had brown speedy and pam 177 combo...

Yes, get your mate to look at some jewellers shop windows to narrow down the list,

With a 4k budget to go with a speedmaster for me it has to be a planet ocean, newer model 8900 movement to cover the sports/dive watch, Or dressier watch something from panerai? Or even IWC for a fliger.. suppose it all depends on taste and what they want to use it for?

I really don't think anyone is trying to be a 'party pooper', the forum has many thousands of members and each of us could probably recommend a handful of watches to the OP for around four grand, the OP will then take these thousands of suggestions to his mate who will not have a clue what they look like, gold, steel, round, square, chronograph, diver, bracelet, strap etc etc.

Haven't quite seen thousands of suggestions but a range of good ones which the OP can then take back to his mate who can then google (or whatever) them and see which ones he likes. He could then go and search out the ones he likes in shops (if he's lucky enough to have decent watch shops close enough to him) to try them on. For me the suggestions on here in these kind of posts give the less experienced of us in the wide world of watches a great starting point. If people are sick of these kind of posts the surely it's just easier to ignore them and let others reply rather than the negative replies?

Don’t forget to spend a few rainy afternoons on Chrono24. Put 4K, gents, automatic into the filter and off you go.
