Wow! I didn’t really know much about ginger until I watched the beware of me baker documentary. As a child and a student of the guitar I was more into Clapton but always knew that the drummer for cream seemed to play different syncopations than any other drummer I was listening to in rock (makes sense that ginger was a predominately a jazz drummer I guess).
He was certainly quite the character... after watching the film I actually felt quite sad for him in many ways.

The fact that my 16 y/o knows who he was tells something I suppose. He told me about his death reading an online newspaper. And scrolled through his playlist looking for The Cream. RIP Ginger Baker.

Very sad news, one of the best drummers of all time, a reminder of our own mortality when our heroes pass.

I saw Ginger in 1974 with the Baker Gurvitz Army at the Southend Kursaal, he did his drum solo he called the Toad. I loved ‘Pressed Rat & Waterhog’ which he voiced over. I was told never to meet him as he was such an arshole, nobody had a nice word to say about him apart from Lemmy. They were the same breed.

A mate of mine asked for his autograph in the very early '70's, as he was a huge Cream fan.

His talents went way beyond Cream, the stuff he did with Fela Kuti was fantastic and he was a handy jazz drummer too.

I mainly remember him from his African adventure. Travelling overland, through the Sahara, to set up a music recording studio in Lagos.
His talent matched by his temperament. Unfortunately he lived like his mentor Phil Seaman whereas he should have lived like his contemporaries Fleetwood or Watts. His nature came out in his playing like Stewart Copeland or Lars Ulrich.
