    Well I never knew that!

Something very useful I've found out today. There's a little arrow by the fuel gauge on a modern car's dashboard which indicates which side of the car the fuel filler is on.

Many's the time I've driven into a fuel station in a hire car & had to guess what side the filler is on. Always seem to get it wrong & end up stretching the hose over to the far side of the car. Then it still doesn't reach & end up moving the car. Never again!!!

Anybody else on here not know that??

Had no idea. But to be honest, remembering what side the filler cap is located has never been something I struggled with

EDIT: I will, however, be checking the dash tomorrow.

I had to check out mine & Mrs T-7's cars on the drive to confirm that they both have the arrow. Never noticed it before.

Hose on the pump icon usually indicates what side the filler cap is on.

Also, under the bonnet, the cap with 710 on it is where you put the oil....

    Every day's a school day

I just had to go outside and check ours - and I've been driving for 52 years!
    Best Regards - Peter

I'd hate to be with you when you're on your own.

If there's an arrow, it indicates the side. If there is no arrow then the side the nozzle is on shows which side.

Didn't know it, because my car doesn't have it.

I just park at whatever pump is available though. Its not difficult to park close enough for the hose to reach.

Well I never ! I'm just a youngster compared to you guys (driving for 30 years), and didn't know this. This will be so handy, I never remember the side for my wife's car.

[I'm suspicious that this is actually true as I've never noticed this before, but I'm assuming you're right and I'm just unobservant.]

P.S. The chap at Enterprise obviously didn't know this either when I asked which side for a van I hired last month, when sitting in the cab (and he didn't know).

Not sure that's not an urban myth. Why do beer cans have the hole?!

If it is an urban myth, well it works. I imagine that perhaps it's just an unintended consequence of design.

Just to prove it isn’t always the case, this was my wife’s 2003 Honda with the petrol hose picture on the right but the fuel filler on the left

LOL, never paid any attention to it.. if I drive vehicle I’m not familiar with I always check which side the fuel tank is on, tyres, spare and screen wash level when look under the hood as well as the dipstick is fully sited just in case. A couple of years ago had a hired car delivered to us with oil cap missing..

No, it doesn’t, unfortunately. Before the arrows came along, there was no standard way for showing which side the cap was on. If the hose happened to be pointing at the right place, that was invariably a fluke.

Not always. I had a Hyundai Tucson hire car the other day and the indication confused the heck out of me.

Which side was the cap on?

    Well I never knew that!

In the case above I would have thought that the arrow was pointing at the distance left before needing to refill, or 435 miles.
I would go with the random view and say on the right.

I’d say that the filler was on the left as the arrow is on the left. Even though it’s pointing right!

Surely that’s not the actual fuel gauge but the on board computer? I’m pretty sure all Hyundai caps are always on the left side

And here's something else a lot of people don't know.......or DO!.

The hose reaches across the car,AND the rubber hose doesn't scratch the car........so all those you see waiting in line just to have the filler by the pump!,don't need to.I drive past them to the next available pump, they could do the same but choose to wait even after I've filled up n gone!.What are people thinking, surely they are aware it does reach across the car, maybe they think it won't,or it will damage the car.......it will, and it doesn't.Some
will know why some do this strange thing and just wait!.

    So damn annoying!.

Try it you'll see it's perfectly safe, the few feet you walk won't see you have an heart attack due to the that walk to the filler.

Even if the hose was not on the ground, there are plenty of sand particles stuck on the paintwork itself unless the car is just out of the wash. Just saying.

My wife isn't even aware a car has a fuel filler cap.

On my car it touches the rear glass. But I know what you mean, and if I were in a car costing the price of an average house I may think and do differently.

Or have my driver do it.

My Honda has no arrow, ‘right’ pump icon and filler on left.

Has anyone actually got a ‘left’ pump icon? Might usually be correct because icon always on right.

I read on this forum a couple of years ago a guy trying to say it was more dangerous to refill your car on the far side. He was resolute in his opinion that he wouldn’t risk doing it. I can’t really remember his reasoning as I disregarded his thoughts about driving after that.

Well, I went with the ‘logic’ of arrows on every other car, ie the arrow points towards the pump, so the cap would be on the right. But Hyundai seem to want to defy convention and the arrow points towards the cap. On an image of a pump. Go figure.

It was the only image of a pump that I seem to recall on the dash. Still, I was singularly unimpressed by the Tucson. I wouldn’t be in a rush to get another one.

I prefer to do it that way,you can see the pump and you don’t have to squeeze in.’

I had no idea about the arrow do thanks OP.

I always wait for one on the side of the filler. Never been in that much of a hurry.

Something I do fairly regularly if the left sided fuel pumps are queued out. I have to because of the following.

We have a local Shell garage with built in Greggs bakery. What drives me mad are the cars sitting at the pumps with a driver paying for fuel, who then decides to do a shop and then pop in to the Greggs. They can be away for 5-10 minutes.

To be fair, it took my wife 15 years to realise that cars ran on fuel. And that was only because I was away at the time.

I always fill up on the opposite side. The trick is to park up a couple of feet past the hose and just use one hand to keep the hose off the boot of the car. It means I can get the last dregs of fuel out of the hose, I'm not leaving it in there for someone else after I've paid for it.
