My VW CC had a SD slot for updated cards.
I had the pleasure of renting a GMC Terrain in Canada recently. The sat nav was excellent and up to date with the data held on an SD card with the slot on the console. So it can be updated whenever needed of course. Yet over here most inbuilt satnavs that I’ve come across require a laptop to be plugged in via a dealer and at some expense. Which makes in the UK use such a sensible solution?

Cheers..

Ditto on my 2015 Golf and the updates are free :-)
Mind you, the logic on some of the routing leaves a bit to be desired :-(
My not-much loved rental Kia Sportage had an SD-slot as well; I suppose it's for satnav updates. Kia's satnav was a TomTom product I think
Most have a slot (or DVD) over on RRSforum this site was recommended as alternative to dealer prices... https://www.satnavishop.co.uk/
None of my cars in recent years have needed to go to a dealer for an update.
I’d be very surprised if a GMC was ahead of the curve in any way.
My 2005 Mazda RX8 had a DVD based sat nav, allowing you to change the DVD for more up to date maps - Sadly they stopped updating them in 2007, so it wasn't really worth the trouble!

BMWs can be updated with a USB stick although there maybe a cost after 3 years
My cars do live updates over the internet
I updated my Audi's MMI (including Sat Nav) from 3 SD cards purchased at a fraction of the cost quoted by the local dealer. Straightforward but took a couple of hours. User forums are a goldmine.
My BMW had a DVD system, updates were stupidly expensive.
My Golf has a SDHC system and updates, (so far), have been free.

I'd hate to be with you when you're on your own.
My mates 2017 Honda Civic connects to his house wifi when he parks his car and it updates his
My 2019 Golf R has an SD card based sat nav which is free to update. However as I also have Apple Car Play I tend to use Waze, mainly for the warnings it gives about what may be ahead.

I can update my Audi via the Internet but to be honest, I much preferred the routing of my TomTom.
I have an sd card based system in my 2015 Suzuki swift. Does anyone know if the updates are free??

SD card with Mazda but Ford was dealer upgrade
My now quite elderly BMW has a USB slot in the glove box.
I prefer to use my Tom Tom.
It links to my house wifi or my mobile to update itself and is great a re-routing to avoid traffic jams etc.

My Navmii app on the iPhone always works well, and seems to resist the temptation to leave main roads for a cart track which is 3 yards shorter.
Oh yes it was about inbuilt navs!
Jaguar Landrover one is rubbish. It will go down a cart track to save 3 yards. We always judge every turn it tells us to take now. If it looks like a narrow country lane we stay on the main road, until within 5-10 miles of the destination. Perhaps it's programmed to go greenlaning!
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.
Any source for the bmw usb stick (2011 F11), please?

my honda civic 2018 has a garmin sat nav...you can update it via the usb connection
Have you looked at this link from Chicken Pox? Update for mine (not F11 model) - including code - is only £20!

Thank you, I had missed that (thought it was only CDs)

if the car has Apple or Google play (I think) Waze and google maps have such good live traffic updates the in built sat navs are a bit redundant. Free live traffic is very good and no need to update.

I haven’t bothered updating my Garmin 2610 since 2008. It’s not been a problem as all the roads are still in the same places.
Got a DVD drive in the boot somewhere for my E Class nav... prefer using Waze on my mobile for the real-time traffic updates

My UP Gti has a built in cradle for my phone (landscape orientation) so I use my device as an extension of the car's head unit.
It works brilliantly.
So it's always Google maps.
Oh and its 995kg, which is everything that's good about it!
Why are satnavs usually landscape, surely makes more sense vertically so more of what's ahead can be shown?
I’ve used these guys every year for my BMW, very easy to do. Use my own usb drive and download from their site:

I used GoogleMaps (via Apple Car Play) for the first time last week. I was VERY surprised to see that it did not have any speed camera information available?!.
Waze has had that for years, but unfortunately seems to be more reliant on a near-constant 4G data connection.
As already mentioned by others above, my in-built Land Rover sat-nav is rather poor.
From memory, the cameras on google maps only show if you have a route planned in, I think they show if there may be one on the route. I remember switching between Waze and Google Maps some time back and seem to recall that was the case. Next time I’m out I will check again now as its got me thinking did I imagine it, will soon find out anyways.

Ive owned 6 cars with inbuilt sat nav and they all had either an SD card or a DVD that could be changed to update the maps.ive never seen a car where the maps cant be updated this way. So im not sure what you mean.
Re speed cams in Google Maps, just went out to see if they do register, and on my Iphone they don't. That's really odd as I'm sure Ive seen them, maybe they have been disabled, or my memory is playing up. I'm led to believe that Waze is actually owned/operated by Google, so if that's the case its weird that Waze has notifications for cameras and Google doesn't seem to, at least on my set up.

The interior looks awesome on your car, very retro, the seats remind me of early golfs/capris/mantas etc

Sorry to go OT but that steering wheel is slightly reminiscent of the 'quadraric' one fitted to my old Austin Allegro.

At what point do these sat aids be deemed as obstructing the drivers view?
My sisters new Renault has an in-built satnav and it is quite nice to be honest but I don't mind using my Garmin
