Thread: Pilot/Diver/Whatever for 1500 quid. Thoughts?

    Pilot/Diver/Whatever for 1500 quid. Thoughts?

~Evening all, I recently bought a cheap Sinn U2 to tide me over while my UX is back in Frankfurt, but it had a couple of issues that mean I had to return it, so I'm on the look out for something else to keep me happy while the UX is away. My contenders are:

    Sinn U2
    Sinn 856 UTC
    Sinn 857 UTC
    Tudor North Flag
    Tudor Heritage Ranger

Thoughts on the above, anything similar that I'm ignorant of that I'll love?

North Flag would get my vote from that list. Oris Diver 65 is a great watch for the money too.

That money will still (just) buy a Seiko MM300.

It will buy a very nice older full size Omega SMP quartz, but I very much doubt you’ll find an automatic in that price bracket.

It would have bought an immaculate early Tudor Black Bay a couple of years ago but you’d have to be very lucky to find one at that price now.

MM300 is a good call or a Tuna.
for a "same but different" option maybe look at the Damasko models?

If you already got a sinn, I would go for mm300 or damasko and keep some change

I would look at a Marathon GSAR. Very underrated watch and not seen out in the wild much.

I’ll add another vote for Damasko. Outstanding quality feel and beautifully built

Check out Damasko at Chronomaster and/or Jura.

If Seiko isn't a dirty word, then I really recommend the so-called "Baby MM" or "MM 200" range. I've got the SPB083 - the dial is a lovely thing with a rich blue centre fading to near-black at the edges; the bracelet is very comfortable, the case shape incredibly graceful and the lume brilliant. The steel has a hard coating, too, and it's put up with lots of use without a scratch so far. If the blue one is too bling, there's a plain black one (SPB077), or if it's insufficiently bling you could opt for the limited edition green one (SPB105 - which I am desperately trying to justify buying as it looks gorgeous).

Oh, and the best bit: you can do something fun with the £600 you'll have left over.

Buy Sinn watches which one you likes

Some great suggestions folks, thanks very much for all the replies. Thinking about it more, I want an automatic, Arabic numerals and a pretty simple face. I don't really know much about the different Omegas, I've never really looked at them closely, but I'll take a better look. The Seikos look good, there are so many though, so I need to do some digging.

I've been looking at Damasko, don't know why I didn't think of them before, everything I like about the Sinns but a bit different, could be perfect.

Maybe a pre-loved Junghans Meister Pilot? I have one and it is one of my absolute favourites.

As stated above the MM300 is perfect. SBDX*** should be a tight squeeze and a bit more gets you the SLA021.

Pilot watches seem to fit the bill given your latest criteria, but is there nothing else you can think of to help narrow things down? Size, case colour, lug to lug, country of manufacture for instance?

Auto, arabic numerals, simple face - cant beat stowa flieger. They also have similar styled marine/deck style watches, all excellent pieces.

    Yes, I would love one!

However, I just did a deal with a fellow forum member for his U1, came in well under budget, so I might buy something else :)

    I love the U1

Thanks for all the suggestions and opinions folks, all much appreciated.

These are a good call. May be an MM? Tunas are far too big unless pro diving is your game?

MM300 at £1500 is difficult and certainly not the newer model unless you are intimate with a Seiko AD ;)

I was super impressed with the Yema Superman Heritage - that's well under budget. Else maybe a Doxa?

Oris Big Crown Pointer Date 80th Anniversary

I think this watch is a real looker. RRP 1500 you can certainly get it for less used.
