    Weekend guilty pleasures!

    No, not that sort!

I’m home alone in SE London this weekend, so I’ve been able to indulge in the sort of downmarket comfort-brunches that require Mrs Draft not to be there wagging her finger.

Yesterday a massive meat feast of bacon sausage liver black pudding and fried onions with a couple of eggs on the side, courtesy of Maggie’s Irish Cafe, Lewisham.

And today this at Greenwich Market. Omnomnom!

I’ll now be on vegetable soup for the week...

    Pie looks great!

Full English for me every (at least) weekend :)
It's just a matter of time...

Just looks like pie and mashed potatoes covered in some green soupy stuff? Not sure what's in the side dish .... It must taste better than it looks!

P.S. I assume the Daddies sauce is just out of shot.

The “green soupy” stuff is called “liquor” but is totally non-alcoholic! It’s a thin white parsley sauce made with the water in which eels have been cooked.

The side order is the stewed eels themselves.

    Traditional SE London comfort food!

And no brown sauce or ketchup. But there’s a bottle of chilli vinegar out of shot. And for me a copious shake of white pepper is essential.

Wow, interesting indeed, thanks for the info. I really should get out more - so much more to food than battered haggis and chips.

Glad you're making the most of your weekend, enjoy!

P.S. We may have worked in the same group at one point, if I'm right in thinking you were once in SPILA.

You’re absolutely right, in a distant corporate past! Almost my last paid job before I joined the ranks of the unemployable. Will have to PM to compare notes!

And good weekend to you too Sir!

Ugggg The Greenwich tourist trap pie and mash. I was in there once and observed what I presumed to be a Japanese tourist have a meat pie, a chicken and mushroom pie, mash, liquor, baked beans and gravy all on the same plate, it looked revolting and I was shocked they served it up.

If you fancy a change give Maureens in Chrisp street market a go, they do eels and salt beef too, knocks Goddards into a cocked hat imho.

DLR to Poplar so not much farther for you either.

I used to get in Maggies back in the day when I had a premises in Loampit vale - just pop over the river. Excellent.

Top marks for eels with your pie and mash too!

    Proper grub.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

Pleased to hear Maggie's is still going, moved from Lewisham ~1998.
I worked for a local authority contractor at the time, Maggie's for breakfast was an institution for coworkers & I. Absolutely top!

I think yours looks far more appealing too - and I don't have any stents.
