    SDR (Software defined radio)

I'm tempted to dabble in SDR, but I'm strictly an amateur listener. So I'm wondering if an SDR is overkill and/or likely to be beyond my capabilities. I have an AOR AR7030 which has served me pretty well but I'd like to try something new with a wider range. Is there anyone on the forum who could advise me?

I like to listen to SW transmissions - number stations & EAMs on the online SDRs at http://www.websdr.org/ and I also have a Nooelec USB RTL dongle with a simple aerial that I used to use to feed ADS-B aviation data to a few flight radar websites.

Ah numbers stations, not so many around nowadays are there? I used to listen to the lincolnshire poacher back in the day.

Plenty of number stations around still , check out http://priyom.org/ or https://www.numbers-stations.com for schedules and frequencies.

I used to listen to the poacher on my Sony SW7600 with a simple wire aerial. I now have a cheap little XHdata D808 receiver at the moment, performance is surprisingly good for a £60 portable.

Small world, I have a SW7600, it was the dog's etc. Unfortunately the caps have gone and it no longer works. I'll have a look at those links, thanks.
