My old BMW 116 used to turn the rear windscreen wiper on when reversing if the front wipers were on (but the rear wasn’t) if that makes sense...?

My old Golf estate company car would do a similar thing when putting it into reverse and with the windscreen wipers set to “auto”. Sadly that often meant that reversing was accompanied with the godawful screech of a dry wiper blade on a dry windscreen.

And if your electric mirror switch is set to driver then your near side mirror should drop to show the kerb on most BMWs too at the same time

You normally need memory seats for this to be the case. Not sure if this is the case for BMW but it certainly is for any VAG car. Our Merc also does this (with memory seats)

Handy tip for cleaning the car.... if its VAG. turn the ignition on, then off. Flick the whose stalk and the wipers park in the up position. Allowing you to fold them off the screen.

After a year, I still haven't come round the things which my BMW can not do:

    - remember the last setting of the automatic wipers, cruise control and hold brake - why do I have to activate/switch on these things every time I take a drive?
    - switch into reverse without me pushing or pulling the stick at least twice
    - reliably connect the remote app to switch on the heating
    - numerous other little annoyances which I have never experienced before

Chances are, my first BMW after 20 years will also be my last one.
Someone who lies about the little things will lie about the big things too.

Not the case for BMW or Mini, this works in both and does not require memory seats...

I'd had my 3 series for 3 years before I realised that I could close the electric tailgate by pressing and holding the button on the keyfob... thought it just opened it!

Not true. My Golf GTI has the passenger side mirror which adjusts automatically to enable the driver to see the kerb when reverse gear is engaged, as long as the mirror adjuster is set to "L".

The GTI does not have memory seats.

My previous Golf also had the feature, and did not have memory seats.

Yep, definitely don't need memory seats with BMW.

Nice as these electric seat and wiper options are...

I discovered a little while ago that my 2002 Maserati has a kind of primitive launch control. Normally the electromechanical clutch comes in quite progressively when you pull away. Alternatively, in Sport mode, if you hold the brake down with your left foot and take the revs up to about 7000 with your right, then release the brake, you take off like a rocket. Clutch engages instantly. Its a lot of fun but probably not for every day use.

I found out that it is intentional, depending on which version of the software your car has. No doubt pretty basic by today’s standards.

The wing mirrors would fold down automatically at 10 miles per hour if you forgotten on my old BMW 1 series.

it did at one point supply me with fresh drinking water from the sun visors, it would take the rain water from the roof gutter and filter it down through body and into the cab finally using the roof liner as a micro-filter to drip fresh glacial water onto my dash for me to collect. i didn't like this feature so i put a stop to it but much to my surprise the P38 has a back up system where it waits for you to be travelling at cruising speed through the rain and somehow a sensor must activate which allows the rear windows to be automatically lowered to let all that glorious NZ rain into the rear of the vehicle. obviously not as convenient as my dash but im guessing the range rover engineers decided it would be a good idea to have an emergency deluge system.
the engine bay has a "its too cold in here" sensor too. when you are driving along and the engine decides its too chilly for its liking it has a tiny little plate at the air intake (made from tin foil i think) that lets coolant pointlessly mess about with the air temp because 'Alaskan winters'? but in the event of the engine feeling slightly chilly the tin foil plate acts as a bursting disc and lets go of all the annoying coolant that is making the bay too cold. highly efficient system as it takes only moments for you to see the temp needle shoot to the right telling you the engine is now nice and warm.
    wondrous vehicles, simply wondrous :)
This really made me laugh.. mostly because I have a discovery 2! so useful things, didn’t realise I had air con which diagnoses it’s own faults and helped me mend it really easily... the not so useful
Bits of metal that used to be something called ‘chassis’ drop off at will, all the bushes are made of dairylea cheese and try to escape, I also have a fresh water system courtesy of leaking sunroofs... oh and the air suspension.. yup better believe that went Pete tong too. Erm what else... it’s unique ability to drain a heavy duty battery (1000cca) in a few hours, many rusty earth points later I found water and rust had screwed up a 6 cd changer I had under the drivers seat I never knew existed, simply staggering! Steering box, that simply fell out like bond triggering the ejector seat, truly remarkable considering the route it had to take past the suspension diff and driveshafts like neo from the matrix though it bent reality and I ran over most of it. The cup holders though are a marvel, don’t hold any drinks container known to human kind but make absolutely amazing stands for my sons Pokemon figurines... I’ll be here all night if I list anymore

They can upload various features that don't come standard. Mind you, not all VAG products have the same lenghty list. Dutch VAG specialists' (not the dealer) prices for that work won't break the bank.

I added cruise control to my Octavia simply by changing the stalk to one that had the buttons. I had it booked in for them to update the VAGCOM to enable it, but it just worked when I tried it. Magic!

On our Merc E class auto, I moved it quickly off the drive after washing it and parked up on the road, just opened the drivers door just to check distance to kerb, the car went straight into park, so the good old days of moving the car with the door open have gone

    Still looking for those

A porta potty would be a real boon for those M25 traffic jams too - perhaps there is one hidden away underneath the passenger seat?

    Continuing the Honda theme

I knew that the Jazz's rear seats go absolutely flat giving an impressive load space but it wasn't until I was fiddling about with Mrs V's interior last week that I realised that this could also happen in the rear

    That's really useful

Having read up on it since, I see that Honda placed the petrol tank under the front seats as opposed to the usual position under the rears to create this additional space. They should have called this the Honda Tardis.

You can still drive it with the door open. Yes it will automatically go into park but you can then just put it back into drive and it will pull away. Does on my 16 plate anyway.

When I got my BMW X5 I discovered after a month or two that holding the lock button on the key fob for 3 seconds after locking caused a red bulb to flash on the rear view mirror. Turns out it means I have deactivated the motion sensors for movement in the car. In other words wee dog bouncing around in the back seat while I go to pay for petrol no longer sets off the car alarm <3

think you'll find it will drive with door open only if your seatbelt is on, wouldn't want you falling out!

Press and hold the drivers side 'Auto' button for about 3-4 seconds on an Audi with dual climate control and it matches the passenger and drivers side temps to the same temp and allows both to be controlled from the drivers side button.

Very handy when your wife doesn't understand that there is generally a comfortable zone which can be found between 'full blast hot' and 'full blast cold', and constantly switches between the two.

The interior of the Jazz is a thing of wonder, and such an intelligent use of space - the previous Mrs P has had three of them, and I never ceased to be amazed how much junk she could cart around in what is, after all, a small car.

On the subject of ex-wives - have I missed an episode, or did you not sack the previous Mrs V?

A mate of mine ( many years ago ) discovered that the steering wheel centre in his Clio 16v could be prised off and the space behind it could accommodate a 8th of weed quite comfortably.

My velar has some sort of fancy adaptive auto main beam.

Sticks main beam on in all sort of dark situations then turns nuts of the pattern on or off dependent on approaching vehicles or vehicles you're following etc.

Only found out now the evenings are getting darker

Any idea how I can tell if this is on mine?

I have noticed that it has the cornering lights thing when going around bends, but I don't want to blind people while testing to see if it is on there or not!

This is likely to end up damaging the auto box due to the strain placed on the parking pawl inside the box.

My sister's Audi has automatic headlight dipping, which dips the lights when the sensor detects the lights of another car approaching.

It also dips the lights when they reflect light from road signs. So, approaching a sharp bend on an unlit country lane at night, the headlights dip when they detect light reflected from warning chevron signs which warn of a tight, potentially dangerous bend.

    I will have a look.

Too much to get used to at the moment and no manual provided with the car, which seems a bit odd!?!

The new e-tron I have in order has standard LED headlights, upgradeable via subscription to matrix LED apparently. This ‘function in demand’ will probably become more common going forward.

It’s a bit like buying apps for your mobile phone. You just buy the basic car, then can choose to add additional functions as and when you want. At the moment it’s just the matrix LED lights, but in future it could for example be any of the driver assist programs like lane assist, adaptive cruise, park assist.
Could be useful if you lease a car since you only have to pay for the options during the period of the lease.

I can absolutely see that being the way forward. It means you only pay for the options that you want during the lease. It also makes resale of a car easier if the 2nd owner wants a different function/option.

The machines my company makes (electronics assembly robots) are mostly fully hardware equipped with speed improvements and additional features unlocked with a code which is generated against the serial number.

It would be great if they could somehow in the future do this with the colour of the car, change it at will
When the car is nice and clean, choose white
When it's a bit grubby, choose grey
When you're driving to a TZUK get together, change to a funky colour so no one thinks you drive a 'poverty spec' white car
