    Rolex DateJust or President

Just sold my MGB and MG Midget here in France as we "sell up" and return to the UK and I fancy putting some money into a watch to "celebrate"

I fancy "gold" - either rose gold and stainless on a Datejust or maybe a President on leather - maybe the President, (suit my Brexit stance!!), on a gold bracelet is just a bit too much

£5k to £6k budget - obviously an "older" model - but I quite like "used" watches

    What do you think?

I would take a stainless DJ over gold any day. Gold watches I find very gaudy.

The DJ would be rose gold bezel and centre links to the bracelet

(I would have agreed with you a few years ago about "gold" - but I've just changed my mind - the watch would only be worn occasionally)

That is pretty tasty actually. Not totally sure about the markings on the bezel though.

For me it would be a rose or yellow gold president on leather. Love that look.

"President" is not a model but refers to a bracelet style.

A Day-Date for that budget will most likely be old and problematic.

If you find that quaint in the way that an old MG forever off the road might be fun, go for it!

"old and problematic" - that's how some would describe me!!!

what would the problems be - is the movement more complicated - (apart from the Day wheel?)

Out of those 2 ,the day /date on leather, but as the owner of an SS DJ41, that would still be my choice.

The Presidential bracelet is a key part of the design: leather diminishes it, because the bracelet is lovely. A two-tone DJ just doesn’t work for me, reminds me of old guys in shapeless cardigans.
However, as you’re returning from France in time for ‘Brexit’ you may find that old watches are the least of your concerns.

    Thanks Steve

I've only got three left and they are all tucked away - I may start using the R90S, but at my age, I reckon there's a danger of falling off/over/or whatever - my reactions are not what they were
the best I can do I think is on the Brompton I got last year, although I think an electric front hub will help and the conversion is quite straightforward
but, when we get back to the UK, I will only have room for one Bike, and as my wife says, "watches take up far less space"

"reminds me of old guys in shapeless cardigans" - cardigans, funny you should mention that, we had friends round for dinner last week and the night got a bit chilly and the guy said, "what I need is ...... a cardigan" - took him a while to remember the word ...... started with "pullover" then cardigan

Brexit - hopefully the UK can then change back to £ s and d's .......not 100 pence to the £ either - but proper pence - 240 pence to the £

I’m seventy (agh!) and wear a DayDate, but sadly I don’t own a single cardigan or pullover. Knitwear is best avoided.

being from Yorkshire, the DayDate should go well with my flat cap, matching of course

    Sold your MGB?.........sacrilege!

Not sure about a Day-Date at your target price, you’ll struggle to find a good one. If you’re not bothered about the bracelet you might find something, but for me the bracelet is all part of the look.

    Hi Paul

MGB - a very good example, (but rubber bumper) - complete engine out etc., rebuild - had to almost "give it" away - nowhere to keep it in the UK and could not really bring it back - sold all three including a proper 1976 Beetle Karmann convertible
(to rent a garage in Winchester, (if you can find one in a safe area), is almost as expensive as renting a house in S Yorkshire)
we had owned the midget from new, 1978, 19,000 miles from new - again rubber bumper

I'd never use them now - my son and daughter did not want them, so they just went

Bracelet is key. Without the bracelet, it's not the "President". And go for a smooth bezel.

Wear in the bracelet is a big problem with these and has a strong influence on value. Buying one with a poor bracelet, which could be scrapped for a significant sum, may be the the best way to buy at this price point. I wouldn't because I prefer the watch on the bracelet, I don’t like Rolex watches on straps, but some think otherwise.

Incidentally,I think it’s worth spending decent money to get a good DayDate. A knackered bracelet can be expensive....Rolex won’t sort it....and you want the later quickset changeover.

At this price point I'd be going Datejust. Brand new from AD, 36mm fluted white with Romans on jubilee for me.

Buying a 'Budget' DD sounds as sensible as buying a budget Ferrari imo!

It would be a more sensible choice in some respects. If I wanted a Day-Date I`d look to spend a minimum of £11-£12K and find something as new as possible. Unlike other watches it's (almost) all about the bracelet condition. I`d be happy to buy older if the condition was truly exceptional, something that had barely been worn, but they're not easy to find.

A newish bi-metal Datejust would also be worth considering, not to everyone's taste but I like 'em.

It seems I’m in the minority but I quite like the DD on leather, it may be all about the bracelet but there’s less chance of looking like an extra from Narcos or the Wolf of Wall Street without it. What are the problems with older ones, is the movement an issue? And would an RSC service not sort it out?

I think the DD takes the DJ to a class above once you get used to the "look" - I also think that leather just tones the DD down for those who feel that the bracelet is just too much.

I still appreciate my 5513, 16610 and 16570 and have a few vintage OP's ......... but I now just want something "different" and I think the DD or the 116264 may fit the bill

But you can have a DayDate in white gold (or platinum!) . Is it ‘too much’ then?
But note how similar a current 41mm DateJust can appear.
There’s a lot to be said for the current DateJust.

The DJ costs about a quarter of the price of a new DD40, and less than almost any old DayDate that functions.
    Makes you think......

I think that it's pence to the £

cannot remember where the d comes from in £sd

(Edit: apparently it's from the Latin - Denarius - "The abbreviation originates from the Latin currency denominations librae, solidi, and denarii")

The only thing against a Yellow Gold DayDate is the chunky bracelet, it is just too loud for comfort. The leather strap tones it down to perfection aka a PP.

The only good Rolex bracelets are either SS or White Gold. If you wear a YG or TT, you come across as a bit DelBoy.

The non quickset Day-Dates require commitment to wearing or winding forward! They do have the stepped dial which I really love though. I think 1978 was the cutover year - but the stepped dial is the easy way to tell it's not quickset.

I haven't had any problems with my 1974 model, and I've had it about 2 1/2 years. That's just a data sample of 1 however.

White Gold Daydate on Black leather with Deployment. If poss with either a White or Black Dial.

    Uber classy.

^^^^Have to agree here...bought a DD on a president bracelet but never wore it on anything but leather
The bracelets are usually badly worn on older ones and often get scrapped making cheaper ones available on straps.
That’s what I’d buy and in WG too if possible

To me, the Presidential bracelet is the reason for buying a DayDate; without it, the watch becomes greatly diminished.
As people have observed, if you want a DayDate, prepare to spend a good amount of money. Don’t cheapen-out with knackered old watches, badly worn bracelets.
My dentist has a 25-year-old DayDate, yellow gold, worn every single day. Used routinely for swimming. But he spends real money having it serviced properly and regularly. Looks great, and I don’t usually like yellow gold.

Have you had a look at the 116138 Datejust. I really enjoy mine and have not seen another in 'the wild'. There are a few around on chrono24 and prices seem OK compared to some!
