Great British actor with depth and gravitas by the cartload or one trick pony wooden-top?
He pops up in quite a lot of films but he always seems to be a slightly different version of Richard Sharpe, a role he played perfectly.
I was reminded of his abundant manifestations while catching the end of Silent Hill.
Adam Riches parodies him in 8 out of 10 cats does countdown.

He's good for Yorkshire Tea, probably the best acting he does.
I think I first became aware of him when he played Julie Burchill's dad in a TV play in the early '90s. Very good in those gritty action roles, although that wasn't one of them.
He is carved entirely from wood a typical naff British actor!
I loved Sharpe but I don't think he's brought anything different to any other character he's played since then.
I still find him very watchable though and am dipping in and out of that new Frankenstein thing he's in.
Very hit and miss for me. Some great roles, some not so much.

His American accent in "drone" was cringeworthy. Always liked him as sharpe though.

I don’t think he’s bad, but I agree he’s no chameleon in terms of range and has been in some poor productions.
He does tend to get typecast in similar roles & not be as selective in his roles as he perhaps could be (his workrate across both Film & TV is substantial).
One thing to his credit is an ability to be accepted as both hero & villain - there’s not many Hollywood stars who do both roles well, or at least are allowed to (Michael Douglas being a notable exception).
I thought he was good in a more thoughtful role in ‘The Martian’, and as a cross-dressing teacher in ‘Accused’.
International Emmy & BAFTA awards mean somebody thought he must be half-decent on occasion.
I like him, he's a sort of Northern Ray Winston. Massive Sheffield United fan as well, he has a tattoo to that effect.
Wasn't he in a film with Deniro and co - played some ex british soldier who'd allegedly been in Northern Ireland - trigger happy type - he was RUBBISH in that
I liked Sharpe though - and good in GOT until he got that neck problem
He's the northern Jason Stratham or vice versa, you either love him or hate him, I've always liked Sharpe.. Mostly for the theme tune though.. Over the hills..

Ronin, with some fabulous car chase scenes.
I like him most of the time but he's appeared in some lemons. His American accent is just a slightly modified Sheffield accent and I read somewhere that everybody in the Kingdom of The North had to do a Sheffield accent because Bean couldn't do the accent they originally wanted.
I think he would be a great guy to have a pint with.

Sharpe had me creased up. One could imagine, so small was the budget, that the greatest cost was the bus fares to get them on location.
He’s a handsome devil though. I bet women are all over him like a rash. He must be getting my share.
As someone once pointed out, how did they come up with the pronunciation of his name? Should it not either be Seen Been or Shorn Born?
I like him, he is what he is, but mostly entertaining.
I enjoyed his brief appearance in episode 7 of bawdy sitcom Sally4ever parodying himself. Worth a look if you’re a fan!

Absolutely, when ever we are watching a film and a character is played by Sean Bean we run a family sweepstake to see how far he makes it through the film.

Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.
I must be the only one who thinks he ruined the Sharpe character then. I read lots of the books before the TV series came along and Sharpe was very firmly a Cockney urchin come-good in my mind. Sean Bean's Yorkshire accent never worked for me and his failure to carry off abything else says it all really. Plus the character they chose to play Patrick Harper was way too small.
Just me, I know.
He's been married five times; divorced four. You'd need to work constantly to keep up with the alimony...
As an actor, I much prefer him in supporting roles in films. I don't think he can 'carry' a movie in the same way as he can as lead character in a TV series.

In LOTR he should have been cast as Aragorn.
The film was Ronin. Fantastic movie with one of the best car chases.
The character he played in that movie was a walt trying to get into the action, not an experienced soldier as the character falsely claimed. As such, I think he played the part well. If it looked uncomfortable in some way then I think he succeeded in portraying the faking character.
By the way, what colour is the boathoues in 'Huurford'?

He was good in the red riding trilogy TV series. A very fine piece of TV drama if you haven’t seen it.

Totally agree. He made the character convincingly weak and unlikable. Good acting.
Someone (it might even have been you. lol) had a theory about qualities possessed by actors. One quality was 'casting range' - you can have actors who basically play the same character in every film, but some actors can be cast in a much wider variety of films than others. As an example, you know what to expect of Gerard Butler, and what the basic tone of his films is going to be. He has a narrow casting range. Tom Cruise on the other hand (or Ryan Gosling, come to think of it), could be in almost any genre of film; he'll still be playing Tom Cruise though.
Sean Bean is a good actor with a limited casting range.

I vaguely remember an interview where he recalled the director pointing out that Sharpe didn’t come from Sheffield. Sean put him right.
The wife adores him, not least because his voice places her dad and his workmates in daft situations throughout space and time.

I guess that is quite limiting, then. I recall he played (Peckham's own) Andy McNab as a Yorkshireman in Bravo Two Zero, as well. But to be fair, a lot of actors stick with their own accent for their whole careers.
Oh yes I'd forgotten about that - a real departure from his usual sort of role and quite convincing. Still played a character apparently from Sheffield though.
His accent is really more Rotherham /Doncaster, sort of Fred Trueman, his faux Yorkshire tones aren't how he sounds off camera.
