    Not Your Average Shopping Saturday

What a day. Headed into Kingston (the on Thames one) today with my teenage son for a haircut and a bit of light shopping.

Just as I get to the bike rack next to John Lewis (must be a couple of hundred bikes locked up), I notice a couple of lads all in black clothes cycling off and catch a glimpse of what looked like bolt cutters. So, I decide to slowly follow them, and they speed off, so I know it’s all dodgy and they’d stolen the bike.

So what follows is a high speed bike chase through Market Square and beyond, with me shouting stop the robbers (nobody did).

Finally get to the inner outskirts of Kingston and they know they’re not going to shake me so they stop and pull out the bolt cutters two feet long. For my safety I circle them at 30 yards. Then we come to an agreement they drop the bike and I give up the chase. So off they trot without one bike (the guy says the other bike is his - yeah right) and I call 999 and report them so hopefully they can be picked up in the area.

The bike was a carbon fibre Cube, and I drop it off at the police station.

Stupid owner had left it on a cheap combination lock, which was still on the floor when I headed back later.

At a minimum, lock your bikes with D-locks fellas.

It amazes me that people secure a 1k bike with a 10quid lock.

Good on you for stepping up.

I'm going against the grain here and say you should have just called 999 and left it at that. You'd get no thanks if you were stabbed or attacked and the thieves would probably film it and laugh. Your life is worth more than a strangers bike.

If anything happened to you, your son could suffer from PTSD and guilt.

I hope the bike owner shows his gratitude and that the thieves get what's coming to them - which in my World of justice would be just shy of death!

    Well done.

Carbon fibre Cube £1500 min , more like £2500. I ask myself would I have done the same , and am unsure, well done for a great intervention. Just dont make a habit of it :)

Well done that man. It’s easy to not get involved. It takes courage to stand up to these scrotes.

First instinct says, "Well done you! Someone has to stand up to these feckless bastards."

Second instinct says, "Not your problem and not worth orphaning your kids for. It's someone else's bicycle. It will be insured. And the owner should have taken more care to lock it properly."

Well, the less affluent bits aren't too far way, especially if you're riding a (stolen) bike...
