Unfortunately I don't have any recommendations, but I would say approach with extreme caution.
Even manufacturers can be guilty of poor refinishing. I've seen what I would consider substandard refinishing from Rolex themselves lately where the grain on the bracelet is miles off the factory finish. Has a more course appearance and not uniform. Almost like they've used a sisal wheel that's too aggressive.
And that's where I think the problem lies. I can only make assumptions, but I assume they just use various abrasive wheels to remove marks and damage, then proceed to finish with a buffing process, again with polishing wheels depending on final finish.
