    New Land Rover Defender revealed...

Apparently snapped on the latest Bond set

Looks to me like a Skoda Yeti on steroids...

Seems will be officially revealed at the Frankfurt motor show in a couple weeks.

And another shot in a better shade...

No way should they call that a Defender.

Looks better in the darker colour! I really hope it’s decent....it might be a replacement for my Disco 4 in time.

Looks better in complete darkness.. I think Defenderina or somefink along these lines suits it much better.. Anyway, it's actually not that bad, better than expected tbh so I just might if they will have one in hybrid.

Being a Defender owner I'm pleased it lacks the character of the original.

    Fully agreed

Well, it started life as a cross between a tractor and a car but mainly tractor. One vehicle for everything, sort of thing. Not sure there's too much call for that sort of vehicle today. This is just a marketing/branding exercise leveraging the "Defender" name. I'm not sure I expected anything different to what's arrived.

I think you have to put it in the SUV/Chelsea tractor box and judge it like that.

Look at what farmers are driving these days. Even pickup trucks are bulbous, air-conditioned palaces.

I was a huge fan of the Discovery 4 (hate the 5) and I see the new Defender in this light. The D4 is still quite popular with farmers and others who work on the land so the Defender should work out well, if not quite in the same way.

I would buy one if the price was right.

Surely vehicles in that category (albeit in modern terms) sell very well: Hi-Lux, other pickups of all sorts, Patrols, Landcruisers, Shogun/Pajero. I recognise that these vehicles cross categories somewhat but they all go where Defenders once went and do what Defenders do/did.

    Nailed it.

    I had a 90CSW for 5 years.
Bought it new, lost £1100 in depreciation.
Rear heated window went tits up a few times, other than that, it was 100% reliable.

That new thing though, is a bag of arse.

Yes! The G wagon from Mercedes is recognizable no matter the day of production.
Should have done that with the Defender

It does seem odd that they didn't do this, when clearly Mercedes were able to do so with a very similar vehicle.

But Land Rover does seem to have a strategy of making all their models look at similar as possible! I'm all for a family style but my impression is that they have taken it way too far.

I can tell the FF RR apart from the others and I think I'll be able to tell the new Defender apart (although its front end says Disco to me), but all the others are good-looking but so similar as, for me, to be indistinguishable: It is a Range Rover Discovery Sport Velomobile or a Evocative Not-Freelander, or what? ;-)

I don’t like it. However it is more environmentally friendly and if you were to run someone over the damage would be less

It’ll have to be an absolute success otherwise it could do JLR more damage than good.

they are on a hiding to nothing here - trying to replace a true icon, but one that had so many faults.

the bottom half is bloated and horrible, but the windows and roof do seem to carry through a certain Defender DNA

Trust me - I see it most days - it’s a bloody beast
LR are heavy in the new Bind movie and I’ve been lucky enough to meet all of the stunt drivers and the Co-ordinaries who is also Danial Craig’s body double

I’ve seen the test cars etc - it’s all good

I wonder how many of the moaners have ever lived with one of the old Defenders as their own car?

I love the character of the old Deafeners, but they are far from faultless!

Relentlessly ripping your clothes on the door catches while getting out of the car,
    Leaks appearing from everywhere,
No room for the drivers (or passengers) shoulders to go unless the windows are down,
No room to get your leg off the clutch on SWB 'bonnet bulge' later models,
Drivers left thigh getting larger by the day due to the ludicrously heavy clutch,
The air-con units (where fitted) meant the passenger had nowhere to put their legs,
    The noise inside (!!!),
    Reliability, enough said.

Driving one of those for a long journey was about as tiring as running a double marathon.

With all that being said, the new one has some seriously large boots to fill, so I think it will never make the old-school fans happy, of which I remain one despite the very abridged list of 'issues' above...

    I'm one.

Had a 2016 TDCI 90 from new, it was like a new classic car. Quirky and fun but the faults as you listed, yep tick tick tick!

Certainly got a few design clues going on here, but LR should've done a G-Wagen/Jimny and gone evolution rather than revolution, IMO.

All of the above duly acknowledged. I love mine and won’t be trading “up” for the hideous replacement model any time soon.

I’ve driven land rovers since 1977 and tried the first discovery released and can say hand on heart the defender as it’s known now isn’t brilliant at being a car but it was never meant to be. I’ve never had a problem with ripped clothes whether it’s combats in some shit hole or on my jeans recently. It’s built for a purpose and with a hammer you can straighten it out. As for the new one the horse has bolted, there’s to many pickups doing the Land Rover Jobs so things will be for picking kids up from school. I looked at a second hand short wheel base the other day but I’m not shelling out £34.500 for one. Aircon that’s what the windows are for.

Test drove one when the Mitsubishi was in for a service at the Nottingham dealer, it’s small and peppy and lots of character, you’ll like it if you love the original because it’s almost as impractical but equally as cool with a few more creature comforts

Reckon it looks alright. I love the look of the current Defender, but let's be honest, it's not a nice car to be in and to drive for myriad reasons. Something had to change.

Like most we've hired a few on hols, capable little off roader with enough room for our diving gear and a tent.

Too soft and sedate and it’s not really defender looking, it’s like a Land Rover branded g wagon

It is (was) a farm vehicle.
Having a sparkly paint job means it’s now an SUV for the school run or parking in a festival car park safe in the knowledge you can read the manual to go into 4WD and drive on the wet grass.

Do we think that price wise it's likely to be as hilarious as other Land rovers?

I'd have to see one in the metal before making a proper judgment.

Not my most popular of opinions, but I do wish every Diesel Land Rover Defender ever built before say 2012 (along with almost every other Diesel JLR product in fact) was wiped off the face of the earth. Every Defender I see these days is continuously kicking out a huge plume of smoke whilst making a horrendous racket. Every single one of them - young(ish) or old.

  43. #43
Think it look alright. What did people actually expect?

I don't know many working country folk that bought one for at least 20 years, it's all Toyota/Mitsu (or a Disco) for people who need to cart stuff/people around farms/fisheries/hunts these days.

The defender found a niche market in people who liked to pretend they're farmers while driving cars farmers abandoned ages ago.

A utility vehicle. Something the army could and would buy for field use.

What we have is just another shiny SUV. LR already make a load of those.

They do mate, it’s called JLTV (army learnt its lesson with soft skinned Snatch LRs in Iraq and Afghanistan)

Enter the Spanish Santana with its Defender-ish model with the Iveco engine.

I really like the look of the Defender, especially the 110. About 10 yrs ago I wanted to purchase one but was veto'ed by my wife: "... no car with LandRover on our driveway. I've worked long enough in Pakistan, India and Afghanistan to know that the only proper car is a LandCruiser."

That was the end of my Landy adventure.

Mercedes managed to re-engineer the G-Class to overcome refinement issues that dated it and keep the iconic design aesthetics, pity Land Rover couldn’t do the same.

Spot on. The G-Wagen looks more Land Rover-like than this new Defender. If Mercedes were able to update the G-Wagen without losing its iconic looks then one would have hoped and expected that LR could have done the same for the Defender.

But no, we get another not-really-utility-at-all-SUV.
