    Engraving

Decided to have a watch fully engraved - been on and off toying with the idea for ages but only now committed to it. It’s a watch I like but don’t wear a lot just now so figured what the heck I’ll give it a go. Probs nothing to report for a week or so but in the meantime here’s the patient waiting to be operated on .....

Not sure if this is a silly question but, what with? Initials or something?

I can't deny the skill and craftmanship that goes in to the work, but for me the outcome is just naff

Interestingly I feel similar if done to a prestige watch like a nautilus or Daytona. I feel it does add something unique to a watch in this day and age when everyone seemingly either has or wants a vanilla submariner. Dare to be different and not a sheep I guess.....

No, I'm not a fan either.

I don't know if anyone here watches Deadliest Catch, but the Norwegian captain (Sig Hansen) wears one of the most ugly watches I've ever seen, it's some sort of engraved, gold thing, it's hideous. It's all I can think about when I hear 'engraved watch'.

I quite like a spot of engraving and have the case-back of my Submariner engraved. There's a guy in the US who does some amazing hand engraving, I wish I could remember his name.

Looks like an 'Alaska gold nugget' watch - vulgar in the extreme but quite interesting to discover their existence and background.

Not something I would consider, can’t see the attraction. It was quite common in the 50s and 60s, particularly with gold watches given as gifts, but I see it as an outdated practice rgat belongs firmly in the past.

Years ago I bought a 1930s gold Waltham cushion cased watch with the most elaborate monogram I’ve ever seen on the caseback, a true work of art. That added something to the watch in my eyes, but that was exceptional.

Each to their own - I did say it would divide opinion so not surprised to see comments like this.

    Sadly not!

I traded it in 2007 with a car trimmer in Harrogate who did some work on a seat for me. I’d bought a pair of leather seats for the TR6 I owned, one needed work, the guy agreed to do it for £75. Turned out he was a watch enthusiast, I ended up selling him the watch! I think I took £40 off him and got the seat fixed free so
i was happy with the deal. The watch was a beauty, a gold cushion case with white enamel dial and blued steel hands, a nice example of that 1930s style.

Could you perhaps PM me an indication of the cost, please, as I am very tempted to get my Ocean One done in a similar fashion.

More entertaining to others perhaps (in a car crash rubber neck style) but funnily enough that’s not my driving motivation

Wow quite an area of surface work on the Pam. I know of that engraver.

I think it looks awesome, minimalism is obviously en vogue at the moment but it means a lot of watches look quite similar.

I agree regards it looking better on cheaper watches. It shows more of an appreciation for the skill involved as opposed to focusing on a luxury watch.

Surprisingly nervous about it. Dunno why. Think he takes a full week to do it, so will post a few updates as it progresses hopefully.

Sounds good (and considerably cheaper than Viljo, I enquired about his rates becasue owning the Aevig Corvid made me want to get one done).
I shall be watching this with interest. Does he anticipate any issues with the use of titanium in the case/bracelet?
At that scale of cost, I am getting all tempted again.

The Corvid eventually went back to the guy who had it engraved, he realised (perfectly correctly) that he was mad to let it go.
He was even kind enough to offer more for it than I paid him. Involuntary profiteering - I bet that has some people here all conflicted.

It’s steel. No titanium. I asked for a slight change to his floral pattern and more of a fleur-de-lis pattern in links. He did a test link on one of his spare bracelets - I have told him to go ahead but here’s the design we came up with between us

Will do. I’ll post running progress pics here but will post the finished job on the group page. Tbh the guys photos aren’t very good so it’ll be good to have it in hand to photo (hopefully) a bit better.

Ok test links finished do the work can start for real / first lines etched today. I learned already in this process - you can’t rush an engraver. It’s 3 weeks since I sent the watch, so as long as people are ok with delays then all good apologies for photo quality - just the update snaps he sends me

No, it was commissioned by LW and sold under the name "Oktopus Moon Tattoo". There are 59 individual pieces all hand engraved and unique in terms of design.
