Not sure if this is a silly question but, what with? Initials or something?

Decided to have a watch fully engraved - been on and off toying with the idea for ages but only now committed to it. It’s a watch I like but don’t wear a lot just now so figured what the heck I’ll give it a go. Probs nothing to report for a week or so but in the meantime here’s the patient waiting to be operated on .....

Something like this I imagine.
Cheers..

Look forward to seeing the finished article.
Wow indeed! Each to their own, but not my cup of tea.

skill but imagine slipping on the case !!!!
I can't deny the skill and craftmanship that goes in to the work, but for me the outcome is just naff
Not something I would consider, can’t see the attraction. It was quite common in the 50s and 60s, particularly with gold watches given as gifts, but I see it as an outdated practice rgat belongs firmly in the past.
Years ago I bought a 1930s gold Waltham cushion cased watch with the most elaborate monogram I’ve ever seen on the caseback, a true work of art. That added something to the watch in my eyes, but that was exceptional.

Nice to have something that’s pretty unique
No, I'm not a fan either.
I don't know if anyone here watches Deadliest Catch, but the Norwegian captain (Sig Hansen) wears one of the most ugly watches I've ever seen, it's some sort of engraved, gold thing, it's hideous. It's all I can think about when I hear 'engraved watch'.
I quite like a spot of engraving and have the case-back of my Submariner engraved. There's a guy in the US who does some amazing hand engraving, I wish I could remember his name.
Have been admiring engraved watches from afar for some time, go for it I say, looking forward to seeing the end result
I like it if tasteful, my engraver had hell of time with the ceramic bezel on the Daytona
I imagine it's like getting your first tattoo... Engraving your favorite watch. Not everyone's cup of tea but I like the look of that. Please keep sharing the progress

Are you doing it yourself?
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.
Should have done it yourself. Outcome would have been far more interesting

Sadly not!
I traded it in 2007 with a car trimmer in Harrogate who did some work on a seat for me. I’d bought a pair of leather seats for the TR6 I owned, one needed work, the guy agreed to do it for £75. Turned out he was a watch enthusiast, I ended up selling him the watch! I think I took £40 off him and got the seat fixed free so
i was happy with the deal. The watch was a beauty, a gold cushion case with white enamel dial and blued steel hands, a nice example of that 1930s style.
I really like the look of engraved watches and really like Steinhart as well so I can’t wait to see the finished result, I could be tempted to do the same

I love the work I had done on my Panerai. I’m thinking of getting another one done but with the added detailing of some gold inlay. Just need to find the right candidate (as in watch).
It’s the guy from the Steinhart Facebook page I run for limited editions www.facebook.com/groups/759879951014682/
He’s on Instagram also @indice51100
I had my Aerowatch engraved by Viljo Marrandi:

Lookng forward to seeing the outcome. I really like engraving on watches althought I'm not brave enough to have one of my own watches engraved.
It was Dappers pics that inspired me to get my watch engraved, also by Viljo.

Wow quite an area of surface work on the Pam. I know of that engraver.

I think it looks awesome, minimalism is obviously en vogue at the moment but it means a lot of watches look quite similar.
I agree regards it looking better on cheaper watches. It shows more of an appreciation for the skill involved as opposed to focusing on a luxury watch.
Stupid question maybe...what is used to blacken the steel in between the raised bits?
Indelible ink. They apply it once the engraving finished and it is almost instantly wiped off the raised remaining polished surface. The textured surface of the engraved part helps the ink stain take hold and it’s pretty permanent. A bit like scoring an undercoat before applying a finishing coat so it binds I guess

That Corvid is stunning, glad I wasn't around when it was for sale. I love the Kraken.

What are you getting RB? Is it expensive?
I've always liked the idea of getting a caseback done. Just thought it would be cool and easily replaceable if I moved it on (I know I'm a serial flipper).
The Aerowatch works well because of the style of dial case. To me, that Patek looks awful, just doesn’t suit it. I’m just not sure it will work on a modern looking watch like the one you propose.
They all remind me of Wild West guns though...
