    Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date

Thinking about getting an Oyster Perpetual Date, over the next few months - don't want to go mad price-wise, but I would like one in good nick, buying it to wear

prefer leather strap, (I have a few SS Rolex Sports etc), and happy with gold plated

I really don't know anything about the model, but will start to collect info from the internet

any help you guys can give me would be really appreciated

for starters, what do you think about this watch

    or this one

Seems dear. The 1550 is gold capped but in older models can be polished too much .

    Thanks Dr F

looking around on the internet I'm attracted to a pre 1960 "Gold" case on leather - presumably all such are 34mm

what would I have to pay for a genuine watch to buy to wear? - moderate to good condition with some recent service history

what does it cost to service such a watch - £300?

Second one claims to be 35mm which seems odd. For that price I'd be after a similar looking but definitely 36mm Datejust, and get a bracelet for my money too. Ref 16000 DJs have a similar dial without the train tracks on later DJs, but have a quickset date.

If it were me I'd spend some time figuring out which references are acceptable,if possible try to see one in the flesh. Then put wtb on here, and Rolex forums.and Watchrecon. If patient something will turn up in time. From my experience, such as it is Chrono 24 is expensive and I'd be wary of e bay unless knew the seller.
I've only used Duncan Potter at Genesis Watchmaking, you can check service prices online but more like £500 than £300.
    Good luck

    These guys
    https://sonningvintagewatches.com/vintage-watches/

Have some nice pictures, the are pricey and tend to refurbish dials sometimes but might give you an idea of what looking for.

Thanks - I saw them - they have quite a lot of stuff on ebay - but as you say "very pricy"

a friend of mine has the one in the link that he will sell me, (he is not a watch person - it was left to him and has just been sat in a draw) - I do not think that it has been used for 30 years and in would need a service and maybe polish - the bracelet is small and stretched

I would want to pay him a "fair" price so I am trying to estimate what it is worth
