Moya Brennan was pretty special at times. I remember seeing Clannad live in Southampton years ago. The interval was interesting; the band all disappeared and Moya just stood alone in the middle of the stage and sang with no accompaniment. It was haunting and truly spine-tingling.

Moya's younger sister (Enya) wasn't too shabby either.

I find that you cant beat Ella Fitz on a jazz classic to bring out the very best on a high end audio rig.

As mentioned above; The London Grammar lady is sublime.

Natalie's hi-res 'Natalie Merchant' album is a wonderful listen on decent equipment.

Mo-Fi re-released her solo debut Tigerlily on LP a few years ago. It's a more uptempo record than the later eponymous release, and very nicely produced.

And back in 10,000 Maniacs, Verdi Cries is an excellent showcase of her singing.

Has anyone mentioned the sublime Swing Out Sister?

Should meet the OP’s requirements exactly.

Thanks again. Using a Sonos Connect connected to my hifi, I've got access to my Napster subscription that came with the house. Should be able to find most artists if not all. Its going to be a busy night tonight.

Hazel O'Conner though only "Will You", as the saxophone is amazing.

Nice thread. A couple of weeks ago I bought a triple CD complilation called "True Acoustic" from a charity shop. It has works from a number of the named women with whose works I am less familiar. So, I've been giving them a closer listen. I really like the songs from Suzanne Vega, Lori Watson, and, particularly, Joan Armatrading.

It also had a nice piece by Sandy Denny, who I admire, but knew mostly as a part of Fairport Convention.

    Best wishes,
    Bob

PS Janis Joplin -- Perl, in particular, is a happy making album.

Love the Etta James - Tell Mama LP

This thread inspired me to play PP Arnold all day yesterday.

Total curveball and now fitting the 'female' category but the last vinyl LP I got is a 1st press of Antony & The Johnsons - I am a Bird now - its simply breathtaking.

Favourite music is female vocals, piano, a bit jazzy is fine.

Currently love Melody Gardot, Madeleine Peyroux, Anne Bisson, Tracy Chapman, what else am I missing?
What are you using for source OP? Tidal (now also has the hi-res stuff), vinyl or cd?

I recently rediscovered my CD quality ripped files on my old FLAC player. Made me realise the bud I normally used are not being utilised enough with Spotify.

I'm either going to transition to Tidal - the CD quality/hi res stuff is £20 odd a month, or restart buying music as either CD or CD quality FLAC.

lots of good ones already mentioned,

My top two female singers chosen by Simon, and I would add a heavy dose of Emmylou Harris and Linda Rondstadt

    Aimee Mann
    Sade
    Sandy Denny with Fairport Convention
    Paloma Faith

But head and shoulders abover all other female singers is, for me, Karen Carpenter.

When it comes to CDs, charity shops are your friend. I use FLAC for in house streaming, and convert to OPUS for my phone. (Using Shure SE215s, I cannot tell the difference between FLAC and OPUS on the phone.)

    Bob

This is a great thread that has certainly turned into a who's who of female vocalists. I would add two more into the mix.

Firstly Skin from Skunk Anansie, if you want to hear pone of the most stunning acoustic concerts featuring Skins incredible voice and range this is a must-have album which is extremeely well produced too:

Secondly, a South African singer called Miriam Stockley. She is best known as the lead vocal perfomer for Adiemus, a Karl Jenkins project but also has a few solo albums which contains some gems amonst some more average songs.

Very much agree on charity shops/second hand - when I first got into some of the older jazz, picked up CDs for a couple of quid each.

For phone - I agree not necessary to go FLAC. But you could use the phone as a source, to a proper DAC (say the Mojo) to headphones. Pretty much the epic mobile setup. On the go I am now favouring full wireless headphones, so limited by codec.

Many superb suggestions so far, some more below, with suggestions for especially well recorded/produced albums:

Jennifer Warnes - Famous Blue Raincoat (an album of Leonard Cohen covers, really excellent).
Mary Black - No Frontiers (check out the amazing acoustic bass on Columbus).
    Suzanne Vega - Solitude Standing.
Gwyneth Herbert - All The Ghosts.
    Tina Turner - Foreign Affair.
Rickie Lee Jones - Rickie Lee Jones (Chuck E's in Love)

Pretty much anything by Everything But The Girl.

    I could go on...

I use CDs and a Sonos Connect as my source. I looked into TIDAL too but I've already got a lifetime Napster subscription. May give it a trial

My system is Rega CD/ Sonos Connect>Linn pre-amp>Cyrus Monoblocks>Linn speakers. I did a A/B listening test with CD Vs Sonos running the same tracks at the same time and switching over on the pre-amp and whilst I do notice a difference with the CD being marginally better, I can say that I am very happy with the sound the Sonos Connect amp produces. The convenience though really does it for me. I find myself listening less and less to my CD player nowadays. Before that I bought lots of CDs off music magpie. Dirt cheap and huge catalogue.

I've been slowly going through the suggestions, London Grammar is mesmerising. Really like Mary Chaplin Carpenter and Sara Watkins too.IMG_20190814_222629_resize_19.jpeg

Thanks, a nice setup - do you need the pre-amp for the Sonos Connect? I currently have an older Denon CD/amp all in one with some monitor audio speakers. I do need a streamer, so I'll have a look at the Sonos Connect

No, you can plug the Sonos Connect (ZP90) into any input of your amp much like a cd player. Be careful not to confuse it with the Sonos Connect AMP (which is more expensive)which you can hook your speakers directly to.

Just listening to Patti La Belle ‘if only you knew’ ........ great track to settle you into a chilled weekend. Suspect the Bowmore 18 I’ve just poured myself is helping !!! Friends due round in about an hour and got some decent 2015 Rioja .... simple pleasures.
