Yet something else we have to pay.

Will our goverment actually say a big thankyou to all of us Veterans and give us something for nothing.

    Someone's got to pay.

I'm not sure what's not to like. I got a 3 year senior card when I was 60 and had the money back within 4 months. I'd save that £21 a year on one trip.

It’s the same as serving member pay, seems fair to me.

I have a Senior Rail Card as I'm over 60, and you can both buy and renew the 1 year version using Tesco Clubcard vouchers, which are trebled in value. So £10 of vouchers pays for your £30 rail card.

Applied on Friday, code delivered yesterday via email, added to my iPhone this morning. 3 Years for £61. I'll recoup that cost after two return trips to London.

very glad it will help you,it looks like one scheme they have got right..

Do all railcards offer the same benefits, because obviously a lot of veterans will be eligible for a senior railcard I thought this one would be even better?

    Believe it includes their family.

I don't know. What I do know is that the Veterans Railcard appears to offer identical benefits to the Forces railcard. I'm not yet old enough to qualify for a senior railcard but, sadly, it's not that far away!

The Veterans Railcard allows you to add one additional beneficiary.

For serving members you can get a railcard for family members, it’s still £21 per railcard though

Trains cost a small fortune when we where young junior leaders.
so we would help out the Jocks and Geordies by asking for railway warrants to Glasgow or Newcastle and they would pay for our ticket closer to home.

I’ve no idea what that means but good on you anyway!

So have I got this right...serving for nearly 18 years, if I want a railcard for each family member, I pay £21 each of a HM Forces Railcard but serve for 1 day* and be a "veteran" and you get your whole family on the railcard?

(*You’ll be eligible for a Veterans Railcard providing you have served for at least one day or more in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces.)

Or is this a replacement for a Forces Railcard as the qualifying criteria say youve just got to show a mod90 which any currently serving member can do?

the army only gave you so many railway warrants a year to go home.

so obviously getting home in England 30/40/50 miles or so from camp was easier and cheaper than Scotland.

we where 15/16 so didn't have cars or any way to share costs, the railway was the only feasible way of getting home and having any time for leave.

The other thing they did to make it difficult was most Saturday mornings we did the assault course at Pirbright.

An advert just came up with the main points.

    Better get your boots on.
The new Veterans Railcard gives you and a travel companion 1/3 off rail travel.
    Kids also get 60% off.

For those that are still serving, the only difference I can see between the Forces Railcard and Veterans is a couple of specific rail companies like Grand Central accept Forces but not Veteran. I mainly add mine to my Oyster Card and get 1/3 off all off peak tube travel around London. It appears all I have to do is show a mod90 to get veterans so even though I’m still serving, it makes more sense to buy a Veterans card to add my wife for free as opposed to buy separate railcards.

That is annoying as I have just renewed for my wife and I.

Even more annoying is that HR charged me twice on the last pay run so £84
