    Used car descriptions

I went to look at a 1 year old Volvo v40 today at a local dealers I was told on the phone that it was excellent as you would expect from a 1 year old car, when I got there it would need 4 new tyres in the next couple of months and it had various scuffs on it and the entire passenger side looked as though it had been repaired by a chimp, looked more like one that was 7 years old just think how pissed off you would have been if you had driven a couple of hundred miles to see it.

how would you fare getting compensation for your time and petrol ?

I doubt think you would have a leg to stand on - given you did not purchase the has been no contact between the seller and you so they can't owe you anything.

Ask for a CitNOW video of any car, pictures of all 4 allows and confirmation of tread depth before venturing out to view.

Any reputable dealership franchise or not will be able to send a video wether it's CitNOW or otherwise.

You only have to look at sales corner to see that

    Description: Only one previous owner

Reality: Bought pre-reg and has since been a Birmingham taxi; it's done 400,000 miles and got more fluid samples than the National DNA Database

In fairness, they are unlikely to say that it is " right old s**tt*r" , are they. The used car business has got better over the years, but not that much.

Descriptions/Misdescriptions are controlled by Unfair Trading Regulations (2008) which makes misleading information that affects a 'Transactional decision', a criminal act.

Deciding NOT to buy based on a misdecription, is also a transactional decision so technically covered.

However, it is unlikely in my experience (25 years in automotive retail) that someone could be arsed to complain if they haven't bought, or that the dealer won't immediately dismiss it with a well rehearsed rebuttle.

Only on one occasion have I had my petrol paid.
It was only 30 miles away but the car I owned was from the same garage,I asked about trading it in ,was told I’d be looked after and I definitely buy the car or he’d pay my petrol ,which is what he had to do as the trade in price was ridiculous.
