Not your average 'Safe Queen' (Panerai content)

Since Panerai 'glory days' are behind us (and that's a good thing!) I thought I'd share a couple water pics while I was on vacation. Natural light only, Manual mode on camera and point 'n' shoot.
No Scuba this time, this was post free-dive.
Hope you like them. Cheers and HAGWE

Those really are some of the best photos of a watch I have ever seen! You should sell them to Panerai!

Beautiful looking watch, I don’t normally like Panerai but your photos have me looking at what Watchfinder have in that section!

Not one of the Panerai cognoscenti so I have no idea why the glory days were unwelcome, but those are lovely pics. Nice work.

Superb pics, really nice. I would be too scared to take water pics off the wrist though.

I did that once with a dive watch in the sea, waves washing over. Never again, my bottom was twitching like a bunny's nose throughout.

Excellent shots, I haven't worn my PAMs in ages. Definitely must. I like wearing on rubber too - is this a newer or older one?

A Pam is on my list (following the Harrods Tudor). A sandwich dial is a must.

By "Glory Days" I mean the time Panerai was in the same position as Rolex is today. A lot of hype, premium over sticker and you couldn't get them at AD. Now the times has changed (for the better in my book). It's just a great sports watch. Period.

    Fantastic photos.

Always fancy taking some water shots, but too concerned of a rogue wave that I’ve not noticed while setting the shot up arrive & leave with my watch.

Sold my rubber & leather OEM from my 111 as wanted long leather tails, regretting that decision now.

I wonder if the recent "dress" Panerais have created a useful reaction, reminding people of the pleasures of the rufty tufty ones.

Since listing my Radiomir on SC...it's been back on the wrist for the last week! There is something about the classic designs that just works, a tool watch with an elegant simplicity and they don't wear as large as an equivalent size over-engineered diver with rotating bezel does. These photos are stunning

Not your average 'Safe Queen' (Panerai content)

Pams are photogenic but difficult to photograph correctly due to its simplicity and lots of reflections, that pic shows the real Panerai, not some newer dumbed down version

What lovely photos. Makes me want to get my Pam out of the safe. I've always been to scared to wear mine in the water. Stupid really as its rated to 300m and I have no problems wearing my seamaster or any of the Seiko's.

I honestly can't understand the Panerais strategy on base models with snap on caseback, WR of 100m, and springbars. That are key elements witch make Panerai - a Panerai!.
It's like making a Ferrari 488 lookalike with 150BHP and power on only one wheel. Now I get it that your average buyer won't be strapping any scuba gear and a lot of that models will live under the shirt cuff (good luck with that BTW) and that the wanna push the inhouse models for far bigger money, but if you're trying to sell a story, don't go that way by killing the pure tool factor. None of us will go 300m under the water surface or go 200 mph in a Ferrari. But it's nice to know that we can.

Agreed, PAM's are PITA for taking photos, I was lucky that the angles had help me a little.

    Yes, the sponsor was me

BTW, I know that the Rubber OEM is a little no-go for PAM's and that they are 100% on leather. And I was one of those mindset as well. But I don't know, the rubber and look feels great on the beach.

First of all great photos. Catching the true spirit of Panerai.
Photos like these alone can generate some sales for Panerai, I’m pretty sure
Agree that the so called “glory days” of the brand are over if that means they are not any more for muppets who try to follow celebrities or for those who see only investment in watches.
I really see the brand - in general - getting more appealing to a real enthusiast. However some latest moves from Panerai are not the wisest ever regarding the base models for example. The snap back case is a poor show although not compromising practicality badly for some who use it for swimming rather than diving.
But for the sake of god I don’t get why shoulderless spring bars and drilled through lugs are so bad for Panerai when they are praised for Rolex or Seiko divers?
I can change the strap with spring bars on my Panerai in seconds without any damage. But when it comes to the buckle swap which is still screwed, needs much more delicate tool handling and concentration not to scratch the side surface.
Please someone explain me why screwed bars are so much better than a massive spring bar?
Especially on a watch people tend to swap straps often.

As others have said great pictures and nice to see a fellow 560 owner enjoying their Pam. I was lucky to pick up one of the last gen 560s which have the sandwich dial, in house 8 day movement, screw in case back etc. Great watch and ticks almost every Panerai box for me (oh how I wish they made a 44mm 372) I often wear mine on the OEM rubber and it does give a more sporty/ tool vibe. Only worn now at the weekends since I picked up the BB58. But one I always enjoy. Especially that torch like lume.

What would you say is the purest, closest to original watch they make?

Probably the 372 if you want the crown guard look.

Unsure of the reference for the Radiomir though.

Also they do a MM dial Luminor similar to the 372 - 6xx Again unsure of the reference.

All the above will be 47mm in size.

Guess 44mm you’d be looking at an older base model 000.

That is part of the Panerai DNA. I find it very easy to change straps on Panerais and I love their screwed lug bars. Anyway that is a thing of past with their new fangled ( not so new any more) bars which I am always afraid will stop working. The only thing that comes close is spring bars with drilled lugs. But I like the variety.

The most historically original looking Panerai is pam 21 with Rolex cortebert 618 movt but it’s super rare and expensive (only 60 made in platinum with soldered lugs) earlier this year I saw one in Japan for 100k usd - it’s a homage to real 3646

The more “affordable” Pams with historical correctness are 232,249,294,448,449 for Radiomir (homage to 3646 with multiple dial version);372,673 for Luminor (homage to 6152),587 for transitional case radiomir (radiomir 1940 in current Pam marketing material)

Whilst we’re on the topic, I’ve been collecting watches for 25 years, but always went for dressy ones from brands such as Breguet, Lange, Glashütte and Patek; no larger than 40mm. I just bought my first Panerai, a PAM796 left-handed ‘destro’ model, in a 44mm Luminor case. It’s so beautiful and solid; with 300 metres water resistance, I’ll wear it while I’m diving on my right wrist and keep my dive computer on the left wrist. I’m going to get the PAM739 next, to wear in the office. Panerai is making some awesome watches these days.

The 'm' stands for the Italian word 'Manifatture', which means 'manufacture', so PAM simply means 'made by Panerai'.

I think PAM itself means Panerai Modello alias Panerai model number xxx
