    Knife sheath making....

Reaching out to the knowledgeable TZ'rs......

    My son and I have recently attended a thoroughly enjoyable bladesmithing course where we managed to produce these two;

Now I appreciate that they are fairly basic.....but I think the fun would continue if we made some sheaths for them too. I've browsed a few YouTube vids which look pretty straight forward and thought I might buy some old leather product(s) from eBay to recycle the leather too (satchel etc).

Just wondered is anyone had any specific advice and/or experience to share in this area?

    Nice work.

For the sheaths you might want to pick up a cheap set of pricking irons, some linnen thread and packet of john James needles.

I'd start with looking at how to saddle stitch.

If you use recycled leather it will never look really good. Veg tan leather is best.

Just do a search for 'making a knife sheath' on you tube loads of videos.

Some of mine can be seen here........http://www.oldoakknives.com/index.html

If you need to know anything ask and I'll try to help.
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

Well done, great to make something yourself.

As for sheaths, here’s roughly what I have done:

    Get some new leather.
    Figure out your design.
Wrap it round the blade once cut, will it work?
If so, lightly grease the knife and wrap tightly in cling film.
Soak the leather in warm water, some minutes.
Wrap around the knife as per finished product use clothes pegs etc as required.
    Put aside to dry.
When dry run some strips of contact adhesive where your stitching will go.
Prick the leather where the stitching will go, for neatness use a prick-wheel.
Drill 1.5mm hole with a dremel through the leather on the stitching holes.
Stitch with waxed cotton or strong thread.
Die leather to choice usually dark brown.
    Wax leather, enjoy.

Thanks for that, your knives look really great by the way......makes our look very, very amateur.

I see you use 3.5mm leather......where do you buy this? I can only find large and very expensive 'hides' from specialist dealers.....I only need a small piece for this one off project. Amazon seems to have some smaller bits but not sure if its suitable quality, though very reasonably priced.

You could try leather4craft.co.uk - they have some nice Horween that’s close to that thickness (no, not cordovan ;-))

Thanks, my first knife was somewhat different! I like the look of your knives, and you actually made them, something few people will ever do.

To check what size you need for the leather, fold paper or card around the knife and trim it to the shape you intend the sheath to end up with. Having made a sheath from card you can measure it and know what approx size you need. Allow an extra inch at least in all directions as leather doesn't fold as sharply as card or paper.

There are people on eBay selling veg tan leather in various sizes. I did a quick search for 'veg tan leather' and found this one among others.

Wrap your knife in cling film if you wet form the leather around it. You will need to dye it, but ordinary shoe dye can be used if necessary. Don't dye it before wet forming it. Have a look at the videos on You Tube regarding making sheaths and leather working, some are very good.

Anything else you need to know just ask.

Would you mind sharing the details? I’ve been looking at doing one of these myself.

    Thanks, Rob
