    Hello

Hi. I’ve been loitering around the forums for a little while but have realised that I’ve never introduced myself properly. I can’t see anywhere specific to say hello, so hopefully this is the right place and here goes.....

I’d like to say I’m your typical middle aged bloke, relatively successful and looking for a way to entertain myself. That’s not entirely true though. Definitely middle aged, questionable levels of success but I’ve never struggled to entertain myself. Until recently. Illness has massively curtailed my previous hobbies of mountain biking, fell walking and sports cars. As for work, that’s also done and dusted. So, I’ve changed my focus a bit and become hooked on this horology lark!

I’ve always had a love of watches, right from being a teenager and spending my first ever ‘annual bonus’ (they weren’t always annual and they weren’t always very much!) on a 18ct gold quartz Omega. A watch that I still own and love but oh, how I wish it was mechanical. Who’d have thought it eh? No one could ever actually want those old fashioned things in the next millennium, said spotty teenage me back in 1990something! Idiot.....

The current collection is pretty eclectic. That first Omega, my dads old Sekonda, a couple of Seikos, a Speedy (reduced/racing/date, whatever it’s called and the one watch I’ll never sell!), a couple of Tudors, a Milgauss and various other bits and bobs.

As I said, I’ve been watching the forums for a while. I’ve learnt a lot about watches and a little bit about people. The concept of spending money to ingratiate yourself with a jeweller, so that they will allow you to wait ‘a long time’ to spend even more money, has been a bit of an eye opener. Maybe I’m just lucky to have a local jeweller who has supplied all our families jewellery needs for 30+ years and who values our custom. Old fashioned maybe but a really nice way to do things.

I’ve also recently started to dip my toe into the world of vintage watches. Now, that’s something I’m really enjoying. So much to learn, so many brands I’ve never heard of, so much choice and so many potential mine fields! Great fun though. In a geeky sort of way ;-)

Anyway, that’s a bit about me. I’ve replied to a couple of posts already and maybe as I gain a bit of confidence, I might actually contribute a little more. I’m keen but not all that knowledgable, so please be gentle :-)

Finally, and the whole point of this post:

Hello. I’m pleased to ‘meet’ you. Thanks for having me!

    Nick

Hi Nick, which Milgauss do you have?
    Any pictures of your collection...?

Welcome Nick. I like you had to give up all my hobbies due to illness but watches and this forum has certainly filled a gap and become very enjoyable, hope it does for you too.

    Hi Nick,

    Welcome to the fray.

Lots of middle age here and lots of people doing watches for a hobby as they are accessible to all, compact and can be a very sociable hobby.

Warning, it can be addictive ...

Thanks everyone. Really appreciate the welcome.

I’ll post a few photos up in due course. Just deciding which one to wear for the next couple of days in my second home. Disappointingly that’s not the chalet in the French Alps I’ve always dreamt of but a slightly more down to earth hospital ward.

I feel the cheapest one might be best on this occasion
