The Moonlanding - as the astronauts experienced it

There is a wonderful microsite in the New York Times featuring original photographs and radio transcripts of the moonlanding. It is written in three chapters: To The Moon / One Small Step / Returning Home.

Surprised our resident virtue signalling brigade missed this one

How the Soviets Won the Space Race for Equality

The Cold War was fought as much on an ideological front as a military one, and the Soviet Union often emphasized the sexism and racism of its capitalist opponents — particularly the segregated United States.

And the space race was a prime opportunity to signal the U.S.S.R.’s commitment to equality. After putting the first man in space in 1961, the Soviets went on to send the first woman, the first Asian man, and the first black man into orbit — all years before the Americans would follow suit.

The Moonlanding - as the astronauts experienced it

Well, this was the best we could get from them prior to augmented reality - I have some photos that were a gift to my father from an American chap who brought the first pieces of Moonrock over to Europe for some specialist over here in a number of universities to inspect.
He was at the time, my father, a staff manager of an airline (BOAC or someone...) and had to assist with the travel of 2 chaps who were from NASA, both carrying large cases handcuffed to their wrists, and flanked by 2 armed British plod (who very unusually remained armed for the duration of the flights).
They showed my father the case contents - moon rocks, which were encased in Perspex domes inside foam cutouts of the briefcases, and the Perspex domes filled with an inert gas - as at the time the “risk” from the alien rocks was unknown.
He was certainly one of the first civilians in Europe to get a close look at a real moon rock!

He got on well with the travellers and one of them promised to send him something as a momento - they actually remained in contact, and some years later he received these photos below (and some more, actually nicer ones of the earth from the moon, that I sadly lost in a house move years ago ).
I think the photos are from a later landing, or multiple landings as their is a rover in some images, but their are no notes and my Dad does not recall (and in fact had much forgotten this story when I checked with him today - at 87, he has forgotten more than I know but sadly is forgetting more, and more rapidly of late).

I've posted THIS link previously (I think) but on this day it should be posted again. Click 'Go' and enjoy/relive.

I was 4 years old when they landed and I can recall my father coming to wake me as Neil Armstrong was about to set foot on the moon; as a 4 year old sleep was more important! As a 54 year old it's a defining moment of human achievement.
