    Crazy Street Names

Some street names just make me stop and wonder what the urban planner was thinking. Round here, we have:

Lethe Grove (in Greek mythology, the Lethe is one of the five rivers of Hades).

The catchily named Via Urbis Romanae (Romans go home, or something)

Up the road in Ipswich, there's a Coprolite Street
    (Coprolite is fossilized faeces)

Got any good ones where you live?

There's an old country lane off the Alton to Odiham road called Pickaxe Lane which always makes me wonder what went on down there. Closer to home we have a Snailing Lane, I wonder if Snailing was the 16thC. equivalent of dogging.

Sadly I think it's a few hundred years since the last Grope C*** Lane that most large cities had was renamed.

Similar to the origin of Grove Street (a sanitized version of Grope C*** Street), in Paris there is Rue du Pélican which was originally frequented by prostitutes and known at the time as rue du Poil-au-Con (in English would be Minge Street)

There's also the amusingly named rue des Mauvais-Garcons - Naughty Boys Street.

There is the Butts and Upper Butts not far from me
The name comes from archery butts situated there in the Middle Ages

I thought the Butts were areas between field and hedge left unfarmed, where the plough could turn?
I did once live on Butt Lane in Bingham (Notts again)

This is in Rome, near my uncle's house.

To clarify, zoccolette in modern italian slang means young prostitutes. And there were jokes that Berlusconi should have bought house there.

In 16th Century Rome, Zoccolette was the name for orphan girls in a nearby institution, who used to wear clogs (zoccoli) because inexpensive and durable shoewear.

In Florence, here is a funny one:

Passera in florentine slang means vagina, although originally it was entitled to the sparrow bird (passero).

We have a plaque on our house with the number and "Belle End" underneath. Very few notice.

And there is a "Bell End" in Blackheath.

In Conisborough near Doncaster there was a Butthole road, after a period of time this was changed due to complains from the residents.

With the above in mind this sign in Hong Kong made me giggle
How much do they have that they need to recycle it?

A folically challenged mate of mine moved to Australia a couple of years back, and pride of place on his Facebook page is a photo of him beaming next to a local road sign, “Bald Knob Road”..

    Cheers,

In a town 20 mls north of where I live: Korte Ademhalingssteeg = the Short Breath Alley Named like this because it used to be the alley between the town's prison and the gallows on the market square... Not the only weird name for Dutch streets. They mainly come from an era far, far gone.

Another nice one in the Southern town of 's Hertogenbosch: Achter den Engelschen Pispot. Safely translated into: The other side of the English Chamber Pot (...). Finally, in Enkhuizen, 30 mls north of Amsterdam: Tussen Hel en Vagevuur = Between Hell And Purgatory

I live in Colchester the oldest recorded town in Britain, we just had a newish bypass built and they decided to call it “Via Urbis Romanae” which I think is Roman for “Imagine using this to order a taxi”

I always liked some of the street names jn the City of London like Old Jewry, Poultry and Bread Street. My favourites near there though are Ave Maria Lane near St Paul's and the simply named Knightrider. When I lived in Hull, I always thought The Land of Green Ginger was curious. There's probably.loads others too but can't remember many now.

On a related note, I always thought that the tiny hamlet 15 miles.north of Lincoln on the A15 had a weird name. Who wants to live in Spittal-in-the-Street ?
