The very best strap for a Speedy Pro

Yes, it’s been done to death, but the 50th Anniversary is upon us, and I’ve just bought one from SC, so I can wear it to see “Apollo Eleven.’’
But it’s always struck me as unusually strap sensitive. So, without looting the bank, what are the best options . I don’t like a bracelet on this....

The regular Speedy Pro can have a lot of different straps: vintage leather, cordura, alligator, rallye, canvas, G10, they all look great. Just be careful with black straps, because the dial of the watch is dark gray, not black, and with a black strap it looks awkward.

My personal favourite is this Ken Griffey baseball strap.

Lots of straps work and in particular the Omega black nato.

Straps can and do look good on a speedie, much more so than many other watches. Natos or leather look great. The best strap though is a bracelet.

I’ve got a nice medium tan leather strap which I will try, but I quite like the ‘racing’ brown strap. After all, the Speedy Pro started with cars, not space ships.

    True, I can recommend Heuerville.

Steveo Straps did me this black leather strap for £45, plus the deployant which was around £30. Gasgasbones SPV1 is also a good choice at around £30.

I have the brown dial speedy so naturally I’d pick brown strap, except the rubber as I only have the black one

  13. #13
The original black leather option is the best look imo, then bracelet, then Omega NATO.
It's just a matter of time...

What’s this reference to a ‘brown dial’ speedy? I’ve never heard of that.

It's the 31132423013001 I believe, it has a brown dial, sapphire, and see-through back.

Personally, I always think the snoopy strap looks excellent on a standard speedy

True, but that would be breaking the bank. €350 for the strap and a similar amount for the deployant.

However, Monkeyswag has a more affordable alternative. I had it on my Speedy Tuesday for a while, before I ordered the real deal from Jean Rousseau.

I believe it was around €225, I ordered it in custom length, and with a buckle instead of the deployant.

I wore mine first on a Hirsch for about a year:

    Occasionally on an Eddie nato

And it’s currently looking great on a pav strap

And yes, I haven’t got the knack for photos yet.

    Let me get this right.

OP bought a watch just to go to the cinema to watch a film?

What a great example of conspicuous consumption.

As to an appropriate strap, I’d go black leather with white stitching, as it reflects with dial aesthetic

Why shouldn’t he spend his money as he sees fit? Given that he bought it from SC someone else had already taken a hit on the original purchase price. He got a great example at a good price. And let’s face it, most of the watches we buy we don’t really need. There’s a world of difference between wanting something and actually needing something.

The very best strap for a Speedy Pro

Yes, It’s disgraceful behaviour on my part, buying what I like...and taking it to the cinema. My apologies.
Anyway, straps. Some lovely ones here. But I found this one in my Watchbox (actually cardboard box). I’ve laid it over the Newmark...also from SC. What think?
It’s got the virtue of being free, and is good leather. Later i’l buy something. Tell you what Nunya, if ever in Chichester i’l treat you to the cinema, we can both wear our favourite watches and discuss Puritanism.

He can spend his money whatever he likes, it’s of no consequence to me. Just stating an observation, no judgement from me.

Not for me, black and brown are a no, no.

Oh, I never made a judgement on your buying reasons, they don’t have to be justified to anyone but yourself.

I just made an observation of the action.

I have my Speedmaster Pro on one of Pavs rally straps. The quality is excellent and speaks of the original racing heritage of the watch.

What’s that noise? Oh, it’s the sound of you furiously backpedaling there. You took a pop at the OP and only ended up looking silly. Not for the first time, probably won’t be the last, either.

No back pedalling here, just clarifying what I said as some didn’t get my point.

May be I could have elaborated more, may be some could have read what I had typed and understood it.

Personally like Sailcloth type straps on a Speedy Pro

This one was from Bremont in their new year sale. Seem to remember it being £60 delivered. Didn’t realise that it had curved ends, so sent it back.

Since replaced with one from Watch Obsession (sorry don’t have any pictures and I’m away for a few days)

Some great looking leather straps on here, and some look fairly substantial.

How are people finding changing such straps? Do the backs have 'cut-outs' to get at the spring bars? If not, then I'd imagine there'd be a lot of lug butchery involved in getting the spring bars released. Genuinely curious, as wearing a watch on a strap appeals, but I've typically stuck with OEM bracelets for ease of removal/fitment.

For Apollo 11 you should really go velcro

The Kizzi is the best replica of the NASA watchband that I've tried.

The eagle eyed will note that I prefer the Vance D. Brand method of threading the strap through the bars. The watch caseback sits against the wrist.

Here's Aldrin with the EVA version and the 'straight through and wrapped around twice' method.

The Kizzi is ‘restocking.’ Quite like that, so utilitarian.

My eyes! For me it only works on its original strap:

Or one of Eddie's sand or black NATOs:

It would be the original bracelet or a Kizi Velcro for me.
I find the Velcro more comfortable.
The Speedmaster does look good on virtually any strap though, dare I say it even a brown strap...

I’d never heard of a Kizzi Velcro NASA; but I’ve now put my name down for when the next batch becomes available.

I have to agree with Foxy here. It looks best on the bracelet. If one has to wear it on a strap, there are a lot of choices but the Pav rally strap looks the best ,IMO.
