Tilley.
last weekend, while my girls were shopping, I tried couple of Stetson hats and I really like them. I had a hat 20 years ago, but I lost it and had various beanies and caps since then.
could you educate me what materials are good, what to avoid, what styles are hip, what naff and what will be timeless etc?
here's what I tried.

Can't go wrong with a backwards leather Kangol. That or a panama.

Well cool.... IMHO.....

What can I say I do like a cheeky blinders flap cap
The very fact that you used that expression may preclude you from hat wearing full stop...
And any aspect of "fashion".
Just kidding - I have a few flat caps myself (which I started wearing from time to time some years back and pre-Peaky Blinders).
There are quite a few styles and variations on caps, just go for whatever you like.
I'm really not sure about a stetson - unless you live in Texas?
So clever my foot fell off.
I still have some flat caps from Dunn's outfitters, remember them?
Nowadays to keep my thinning pate from the sun in Fla I just wear a selection of ball caps.
You can buy them ready worn in which I like. I imagine they make me look like an old salt.
Cheers,
Neil.
This time of year it has to be a Panama (preferably rollable) for packing.

and for the chillier climes a fedora would fit the bill nicely and find grey works well with most outfits

and if you buy a hat, it has to be lock & Co.
Ok, so you are tempted by a Fedora.
First of all, stay away from wool. It will not survive the rain.
Second, stay away from 90% of Stetson’s production. They are legendary but most of their output is shite nowadays. While I am there, tread carefully too if you go near Borsalino. They still have some good stuff, but most of their production is at best average, and I am generous.
What you want is fur felt. Rabbit if budget is tight, rabbit and beaver mix or, ideally, 100% beaver fur felt
If you want value for money look down under: Akubra is outstanding value for money, and they are great to buy from.

As a general rule, when you wear a hat, you don’t look as good as you think you do!! I wore one at the weekend to keep the sun off my thinning thatch. Looked a bit of a plonker, was the general view, but no sunburn.
Not that should stop you if you like it.
I recently had a drover style hat made up for me. I opted for 80% beaver 20% hare mix, and it's fantastic. Kept me nice and cool in the Nevada desert and easily withstood the rain we were having about a month ago.
familiarise yourself with crown height and brim width. you need to match them to your build and size/shape of head.
i see so many people with the hat wearing them rather them wearing the hat but then i have had years of practice at getting it right and i know what works for me which is flat caps (not bakers or newsboys) and short brimmed snap brimmed trilbys with the crown not too tall (basically what sinatra wore), anything wide brimmed or over tall looks ridiculous as i’m tall, slim and with an oval face.
i have about 15 hats that cover most weathers/seasons and informal to formal. well some nice trilbys and a short brimmed fedora but no top hat! and no baseball caps. they are for fishing or baseball or watching adulterated american versions offer noble sports.
AND DO NOT WEAR HATS INDOORS! except large inside spaces such as airports or railway concourse.
I’ll echo the above. Hats not always a fantastic idea.
When I was younger and fancied myself a bit of a fashionista, I got a lovely narrow brimmed fedora in grey felt. From a milliner that happened to live in my parents’ village so it was a properly legit piece.
Imagined myself breezing in to meetings from a grey and rainy City Street, whipping off my hat and overcoat and handing it to the receptionist while looking pristine underneath. James Bond style. I’d imagine I was wearing a tie bar and the lot.
Wore the hat once at work, got laughed at and hair looked rubbish when I took it off. I wore it again on a night out in Didsbury as it was gently raining. Hat got ruined. Waste of money.
(Most of my posts on here are me admitting what a div I am haha)

No one should ever wear a cowboy hat over the age of 10. Unless they are in fancy dress or an actual cowboy out on the range.
anyone else getting flashbacks to the "What Hat" thread?
I was at one of those country fairs with my wife, and we were looking at those leather cowboy hats. "Are you going to try one?" she asked. "No, I think they make you look like a dickhead" I replied, and turned to face her. She had wandered off and been replaced by a man wearing one of the said hats. Woops.
Some time later, I was round a friend's house and related the story to him. He didn't seem to find it as funny as I did. Only later did I notice his leather cowboy hat hanging in the hall. So apologies in advance if the Eddie Hitler picture causes offense. You'd have thought I'd have learnt not to make comments about hats by now.
To be perfectly honest I was thinking the same and became excited about the possibility of someone I've admired for decades was on the forum. Hat wise I favour a news boy flat cap type thing in the cooler months, no idea about brands, though I believe Tiley are well thought of
Dunno about timeless but one of my favourites is a Hungarian felted wool hunters hat that I bought in the mid-90s and is still going strong. I don't have it to hand but it's similar to this.
For the last 13 years I wore my Christy's lite felt hat when walking the terrier, (miss that mutt).
