    Usenet

I've just read that usenet is still a thing!

Anyone here use it? If so, what for?

Usenet these days just seems to be a place solely to download dodgy stuff from newservers, actually it always has been that to a certain extent but it seems to be its sole purpose now. I haven't fired up a newsreader in 15 years or so.

I no longer have an account at any general Usenet service, so no I don't use it. I understand that some local groups are still active and useful (apart from the warez and porn, of course).

I do use a few private NNTP groups but they are separate to general Usenet.

It's a good protocol for federated, open standard, collaboration. It's a shame that its popularity has waned in the face of web forums and Facebugger.

I still read, and occasionally post to, news:rec.autos.sport.f1 and, for nostalgia, read news:cam.misc, but news:alt.horology rarely has anything of interest in it.

These days the closest thing I can find is reddit - most of the subreddits that I subscribe to have a reasonably high signal-to-noise ratio.

I just wish that Reddit had a fully-interactive email or NNTP interface. I find Reddit's web UI to be glacial and unpleasant.
