    Seiko Sumo Hulk

I've just found this, an updated sumo coming in July with 70 hour power reserve and sapphire glass. There will be a green version which looks nice.

    https://youtu.be/-Ah0knS-W84

    https://www.watcho.co.uk/Watches/Sei...RoC5RMQAvD_BwE

I still tend to think at £740 its a bit costly but then CW are about the same now, although Steinhart are still a good chunk cheaper for their watches. What do others think?

It is a lot but the build quality of the Sumo isn’t that far off much more expensive watches. My orange Sumo always gets very positive comments. The green version looks great.

yes it gets more and more costly for less and less extra quality quite rapidly at a certain point!

Just found a hong kong based ebay seller with them at £465. seems tempting... I'm mulling.

although I guess you'd have to add import taxes to that.

oddly and worryingly the ame seller has a second listing that is slightly cheapr

Still seems a lot to me for a watch without a ceramic bezel insert. at least it does now have a sapphire crystal.

Thanks Neil. Looking at that insert font it’s the old one I think. New one is spb103.

Nothing to worry about. The first auction is denominated in Pounds Sterling whilst the second one is denominated in Euros. Thus the prices are slightly different. The two auctions are intended to target different markets.

I also note that the first one has free postage whereas the second one has a separate postage charge.

I should add that eBay's exchange rate calculations are very optimistic -- I've never got anything like as good an exchange rate as their calculations suggest. So the one that appears cheaper because its price is converted from Euros will probably not be as cheap when it comes to paying for it in Pounds Sterling.

Arrived today. First impressions are very favourable. The green is completely different dependant on the light - from near black indoors to bright green in sun light.

accuracy wise mine varies. it seems to be more accurate if the power is running down and slow if its well wound oddly. it lso seems to vary for other reasons, some I've yet to determine. it can go weeks beng with a couple of secs/day, and then it can go weeks running -30 secs per day. it can also be +30 secs a day a times. overall its not bad but the variance irritates a little.

Are you sure it's the same model as I've found other version with Green bezel and a Blue dial? it will be the one with the 4r movement. Seconds hand with a Yellow tip.

£740 is a lot of cash for a Sumo.

I think most shopping for sumos will go for Nos or good condition used at around the £350 price point.

If they put a ceramic bezel on it I’d be interested...price would jump a lot higher though I guess.

If they offered the Sumo with a ceramic bezel then I wouldn't be interested in it. As it no longer the classic diver I look for. Also, it then becomes too blingy.

Why does every dive watch have to have a ceramic bezel?

    I can understand Rolex...

It doesn't, but for me £740 is getting expensive and I'd not want it to get beaten up, so I'd like a ceramic bezel. Or at least I'd like the choice. Steinhart give you the choice, Aluminium or Ceramic for a tenner more so yo can choose, something that will fade/can be ghosted and will scratch, or something resistant to that damage.

Well, Seiko or Rolex doesn't give you a choice. So, I'm afraid it Steinhart is for you.

In my opinion, fading and ghosting are parts of character or patina.

Resistant to fading but shatters if knocked hard. Not sure that is an upgrade.

    My one arrived today.
I've not owned a Sumo before and was pleased with the feel. The case, bezel and finishing are of high quality.

The bracelet isn't amazing but at least it's very comfortable.

    A good buy.

It’s easy to find a ceramic bezel for the previous model ie DLW. The current one may fit the new model and if it doesn’t then I can’t imagine it will be long before one appears!

Oh. I'd misunderstood the article about the new one then, I thought the green was a new colour. Thanks for putting me straight. So £465 plus duty for a non ceramic bezel, mineral glass and not the 70hur power reserve. For the same sort of cash you could get a CW, or get a Steinhart with ceramic ans sapphire, and possible the elabore version of the ETA. While the Sumo looks nice and is otherwise well made, it seems a little overpriced to me.

Oooph! Even nicer than I'd thought! How big does wear? What size wrist do you have? I wear a 42mm PO ok but think the sumo might be too much.

Wears great (this is probably my 5th or 6th Sumo, so know what to expect!) Wrist size is 7" Looks big in pictures, but IRL is fine (for me) Quite heavy on the bracelet, feels (and looks) great on the Erika's.

Amazing what a bit of sun does to it!

I’ve been in London today and went to the Seiko Boutique on Brompton St.

There was one of these in stock which I tried on. Very smart looking. They also had the black dial / bezel version, it was also £740.

Chap told me no sapphire but 70hr power reserve.

It seems the chap may need to read up on his own product. New Sumo features sapphire crystals, as shown in Seiko blurb here -

Hang on, I'm still catching up here but aren't there two very similar models, one with sapphire, one without. I understood that it was the without that was currently available on the UK.

But I'm open to correction since the above is only my vague understanding.

From my reading of the previous post, it was the “new” Sumo’s in both black and green, that retail for £740 that were tried on in the Seiko boutique. These both feature sapphire crystals (along with an upgraded movement with 70 hour PR)
I’m sure the older models are still available, along with the original hulk talked about in this post. These still have a hardlex crystal, and 50 hour PR.

Its a beautiful watch but I really wished they had kept the older bezel insert...it set the Sumo apart from other dive watches.

Does it have AR coating of any kind? Can’t seem to find it. Some pictures online show more reflections than others.

Its hard to say. There can be some reflection in the light, but it’s very legible. The sunburst dial makes it hard to tell, as the light plays off it in different ways. Sorry I can’t be more helpful!

It does look nice and I didn’t notice the change of bezel font which is more conservative now. However I did notice the change in the hour hand which I don’t prefer as much as the old one.
