    Conspicuous Poverty Watch Brand

A friend asked me to define a watch brand that would command respect among laypeople but not display an image of conspicuous poverty that comes with the more inexpensive/common brands. Perhaps a Timex, Rotary, Casio or Seiko may fit the bill, any suggestions would be welcome please.

    Thanks

If I understand the question, then I’d say a watch that that has been chosen for what it is rather than where it sits on a continuum of cheap to expensive.

Apple Watch, a gold Casio digital, one of those big, clean face, wire lugs, trendy nato Daniel Wellington things. I see wearing one of these a bit like driving a Mini or a Land Rover...ownership doesn’t suggest a limit to the owners available wealth.

It just has to be a Seiko 5. If GS and Credor are a brand then 5 is.

Of course, the Casio F91 is the very five dollar Casio that Is more accurate than a Rolex, as the old whine goes. If you want to make a point, in a wide choice of colours, this is the watch that makes it.

    Almost anything from Kickstarter.
Especially look for "We chose a none-Swiss movement to keep the cost to the consumer down but offer exceptional quality, setting the benchmark for reliability".
It translates as "we can make this watch for 15 quid and sell it you lot for a ton".

Not really so different from the most recognised brands then.

A Swatch? I can't think of a reason why someone who can afford a few Rolex / IWC / Omega et al shouldn't enjoy wearing one occasionally.

Isn't this the same question, just asked in the negative?
Surveys have a habit of doing this. Asking you the same question twice, but flipped.

In this case the answer's the same. In a survey, I just get grumpy and answer with random extremes to muck the data up. :)

Rolex submariner. Everyone will think it's a fake bought off a bloke in the pub for 20 quid.

some Hamiltons I'd say. Decent watches at reasonable prices. Or a £15 Casio.

Agreed about the Apple Watch: it’s strange in that it’s classless and worn by all from students to the mega rich & famous but also can mark the wearer as a bit geeky elitist (ie Apple fan). Unlike a fitbit which always feels, to me, a bit like those weird shoes that had the convex soles and were supposed to burn millions of calories.

Cover the Rolex on your left wrist with your right hand, leaving the Fitbit on your right wrist prominently on display. Works in reverse too.

I don't even understand the question. I'd been awake since what felt like the dawn of time and it seemed hilarious at the time. I think the gist is "what looks expensive but costs pennies?"

Do these work if you don’t have an Apple phone? Ticked someone off on a camera forum when I suggested it wasn’t really a watch but an auxiliary display for his phone, some folk have no sense of humour, which admittedly is why I did it.

Changed my mind. Got to be a Vostok. Preferably modded to be unique.

Orient Bambino? Looks classy in a ‘traditional 3-hand dress watch’ way, costs very little...

Surely a Tudor would fit the bill? "Made by Rolex mate but loads cheaper innit......."

Therefore a good brand but not requiring quite as big a wad to acquire. Sorted.
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

    Lorus?

    Or perhaps an eBay G-Shock-clone.

Not exactly a brand per se, but I'd go for a modded Seiko 5. A Fifty Five Fathoms would be my choice, but there are other valid options.

    • To anyone not really interested in watches, it's a better looking watch than almost anything else they'll have seen, and a bit more unique than the typical Sub or Sub clone (given they most likely won't know the difference between a fake, a clone and the real thing anyway).

    • To anyone into watches, they'll see it and think "cool, a modded Seiko: someone knows their watches".

I wear mine when there's a small risk of theft/damage, but I also don't want to wear a really cheap beater. The above is my precise, carefully though-out rationale for doing so. So far, nobody seems to have noticed

Timex and Rotary are the two that comes to mind when it comes to 'conspicuous poverty'. Never had one that didn't look and feel cheap, same with the cheaper Casios. Citizen Eco-Drive, Seiko solar or anything Japanese above say £100 and the cheaper end of Swatch Group brands would be my suggestion.
