This does not surprise me. Our toilets get bleached regularly. I get more germs from what my daughter picks up from school than any watch!
apparently it's dirtier than your toilet

Yes, not surprising - but they do get a clean fairly often.
Peoples phone's - now they must be filthy in general.
I try to wash my watch every day and certainly the strap as my 9 month old daughter uses it as her favourite teething ring. A bit of milton helps. Just had to do it now to get her breakfast off the watch and on a clean strap....
....wouldn't have it any other way though

its ok they say time heals everything,
but what if time was the disease?
The best way is to soak in a warm, dark, moist environment to loosen the gunk.
Like say, pop it in your mouth for a while...(?)
You should try looking at what is growing in you headphone earbuds under a microscope. Gagging reflex.
It is amazing what we can live with - our skin is an amazing organ (no tittering at the back please)

Watchmakers wash their hands before they go to the toilet
:)
I am enormously grateful to the Daily Mail for teaching me how to clean my watches.
I don't know what I would do without their helpful moral, consumer and political guidance.
Germ and dirt transference from the Mail more like!

If the Daily Mail says so then it must be true :D
I do try and give them a slight scrub and TLC every few months
I was in a restaurant that I frequent and asked the owner who I knew to take off his Rolex for me to have a look, and man alive was it disgusting made me think twice about eating there! I clean my watches every couple of weeks at least.
Not really thought about it too much, I wash mine in soapy water or with baking soda on occasion. Maybe I should consider alcohol wipes or something....

Not really surprised by the article. I am genuinely astonished by the filthy watches most of my non WIS friends have. Any time I asked someone to pass me a watch, it is always dirty and hasn't been cleaned in years. And those are people who think very highly of themselves, wearing crisp shirts and nice suits all the time. But they can't be bothered cleaning their watches. One of them passed me his Breitling, I told him it looks disgusting and he should clean it with an old toothbrush and soap water. And he said no need, I will drop it for service in 2 months, they will clean it...

One reason I often use a dive watch is because it’s easy to keep very clean. I pop it into a bowl of warm soapy water and give the whole thing a scrub with a toothbrush. At least once a week, and I wear it in the shower too.
I generally do a quick scrub with washing up liquid and run under a warm tap for all my water resistant watches. The non-submersible ones get an occasional wipe with a damp microfiber cloth but they're all on straps. It's the bracelets that get gross, watch heads are easy enough to sort out.
I have to confiscate the Mrs watch occasionally and give it a bloody good scrub, as she would never even think about it.
For mine, never an issue. Regular swimming/showering etc. and I have never seen mine get bogging filthy like hers.
Occasionally I will strip a bracelet and give it a warm water/toothbrush tickle, if I see anything looking grubby.

I often remove the bracelets and put them in a low-cost ultrasone cleaner with some hand soap. Some are unrecognisable after the bath and rinsing with clean water. Using an ultrasone cleaner for jewelry works very good as well. Never, never put your watches in the cleaner!

I used bleach to sterilise my Rolex.
PS. Does anyone on here want to buy a Rolex that looks like it’s been slightly over-polished? 😢😊😉
