Agreed. My dentist and GP surgery pump similar rubbish into their waiting rooms.

    What do you consider Modern?

    I mostly agree BTW.

For me almost all (not quite all) popular music since 1950 is unbearable. Since 1980 it's criminal.

Yes, out and about it all seems to be R&B (the modern interpretation) soul (ditto) / X Factor style music. I find much of my new music via 6music and in particular Stuart Maconie. Not everything appeals and some of it is carp but I've discovered some real pearls from folk and jazz to the melting pot where they all combine, prog.

My dentist asked me what I wanted to listen to during a recent filling so I had the work done listening to the album 'Still Life' by Van Der Graaf Generator a firm favourite though I'm not sure the dentist or nurse knew what to make of it.

Aside from Bowie my interest waned in the early 80's

For me the 70's was the most interesting and diverse period.

Radio 1 is like some kind of torture to my ears these days and though I do listen to Radio 2 I often have to flip it on to Radio 4 to escape some of the more modern stuff on there.

I was having a hair cut and they were playing that whingy whiner Sam Smith. Had to ask them to put the Jam on or something else. They'd never heard of them..... just young lasses 😋

Well, thats a pretty "glass half empty" outlook... I was just reflecting the other day how much great music I get to experience without any real limitations via Spotify and Youtube (albeit sound quality is compromised noticeably on the latter).

There is great modern music for every taste if you open your ears, I would never want to stop exploring, and there is some great home grown talent. I am enjoying Slaves, Idles and Sleaford Mods... not for everyone but dip your toe!

That Bond theme he “wrote” and subsequently murdered was one of the most genuinely excruciating things I’ve ever heard.

My response on hearing it was visceral.
So clever my foot fell off.

Very few genuinely original ideas in music these days - after all, we do live in a post-modernist society. ie, it’s all been done before, and the originals are almost always better than the copies.

I sometimes flip to radio 4 to escape the radio 2 presenters!

As a pretty fervent "rock-alternative-indie" listener since the 70's, I think today there is such a massive flood of new music and talent its hard to keep up with it all.

The mass market x-factor pop music has evolved but is as throw away and obnoxious as ever, but there are plenty of alternatives as there always have been.

Pop music has always been rubbish, pretty much. I think the problem today is that music is too available - there's no reason to invest time in your new LP because if it doesn't grab you instantly, you just move on.

Regarding radio, if you can get it, Union Jack plays a varied selection of mostly good songs.

Not sure that some cheesey music you hear in a bar defines modern music.

    Sir,
Let me buy you a drink.
I thought it was just me.
The whingy high pitched whining and sustained notes (simply because they can) make me cringe.
    Sam Smith...ughhhhhhhhhhh...and the likes.
    Streets....there are loads.
    Bed wetters music.
Gonna stop now...I can feel my heart rate & BP rising...

    Ok…. You miserable old bastards

I suspect you’ll hate the lot…. But. I’ll share ome of the stuff I’ve really enjoyed in the last few years

I don’t subscribe to this whole ‘music ain’t what it used to be’ or ‘it’s not original’

Music evolution tends to be iterative and is influenced by what people have heard…. You get the odd genre hop, but, in the main, there many similarities from one decade to the next…

Kansai Washington - a fresh jazz approach

    https://youtu.be/WFWLFNWmZVk

    Anderson Paak - super cool

    https://youtu.be/bIG35tCV7ws

    Indie kids? - Orilles

    https://youtu.be/0BWOdUL5zSc

    Lots of cool music about…

Or some very fine new jazz, I'm trying to figure out how to get up to Manchester to see this lot live later in the year:

The whole album is on Prime music if you have that.

I did read that modern shite gets straight into the vocals, as yer average millennial hasn't the time for an intro.
This is why the likes of Bowie's "sound & vision" is resigned to the archives for evermore.
What they would make of a 20 minute "Bonzo" Bonham drum solo is anyone's guess?

Very Jan Garbarek. If you like piano jazz then you may consider subscribing to me YouTube channel (sorry for the self promotion!):

You can add ‘Mumble Rap’ and ‘Grime’ to the offensive to my ears. Absolute tosh.
