Have not wound my Explorer for ages as it was worn daily ...
It has been left for about 50 days so went to wind it a little before putting it on and it feels gritty when I wind it ... was smooth to wind previously.
Gave it a few winds and it’s running perfectly. If I pop the crown out and give it a turn it still feels gritty.
Service time I guess, but what is the cause?

I had the same thing on an old Datejust, turned out to just be the lubrication
Just tried it again, feels horrible, almost as if you keep doing it something with break/jam.
If I turn the crown anti clockwise it is fine ... most be something in the movement.
The watch is running perfectly otherwise.
When was it last serviced?
The reversers in these are not lubricated but have a surface treatment, oil moving to them, dirt, or oil on the pivots drying out can cause this issue.

I, too, think it could be an issue with the reversing wheel, may be a lubrication issue or a stripped tooth.
Had a similar issue with my Seamaster which turned out to be the reverser, time for a service I think.
Pity Paul, Walkerwek, is no longer posting, I bet he could diagnose the issue in a flash.

Nothing a service won't cure. Either lubricating or replacing the reverser will sort it I expect.
