Thread: 40th birthday suggestions?

  1. #1

    40th birthday suggestions?

The only watch I haven't flipped in the last 10 years is the Bathys I was given for my 30th.

With my 40th coming up family and friends are wanting to get me something.

Budget I guess would be upto about £600.

    New or used is fine.

    Thoughts I've had are.

A Damasko (budget is tight though)
    Sinn 556 (budget again)
    A Fortis of some sort.
    Hamilton khaki mechanical
    A higher end g shock
    NTH Odin
    Aevig Corvid DLC
    CWC SBS Diver (oos)

    Thinking diver or tool/field/modern pilot.

    Auto, mechanical or decent quartz

Minimum of polished surfaces especially bezels (rules out the Everest)

    Already have a PRS40A which I love

    Any others you can suggest?

    I'm going in circles

    Thanks in advance

Why on earth are you asking our opinion on what watch you want for a self bought 40th birthday present.

You are the only person on this planet who can answer this question.

Just make the decision and be done with it.

Because it's a watch forum perhaps. Why so grumpy?
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

Because if you give the wrong advice, the OP may well buy the wrong watch. None of us know him, we do not know what floats his boat the most and neither you nor I or anyone else is able to make the same level of judgement as the OP.

It's not being grumpy, it's being sensible.

It's a tricky amount of money. I think you are better going quartz, and for quality and personality I think a Seiko Tuna is one of the better choices, although it's a marmite design. In the end what stopped me getting one myself was a B&R Demineur becoming available on SC, and I would be highly tempted by the B&R Marine that has been on SC for a while.

Mainly because there's probably something I don't know about or have forgotten about (such as the tuna, great shout)

But if people would rather have endless threads about price rises and warranty card retention.....

You would be better off asking this question to your wife rather than a bunch of old geezers who don't have a clue about you or your tastes.

Yes to the CWC SBS Diver. If you could stretch to 699 you could go for one of these with the light vintage lume which I think looks great.

Brilliant w watches and pretty timeless to keep in your collection.

My wife got this for me for a birthday last year as a surprise and I love it. She haggled and got it for £610 Inc delivery with an extra years warranty from a bricks and mortar store by phone.

Not sure if it's to your taste but looking back if I knew I would have liked it as much as I do I wouldn't have waited and would have bought it anyway. Enjoy your birthday no matter what you buy.

There are also a couple of our forum master's sold out Newman's on SC recently if you can stretch to about 750.

The Pogue is a good suggestion and really a fair amount of Seiko . I wonder if you could squeeze a Porche Design Chrono from around 79’ for your budget?
I’ve got a CWC Quartz Diver and build quality is excellent

CWC RN Diver in matt finish & £100 in your pocket. Happy birthday!

    Some nice suggestions. Thanks.

CWC and Tuna are leading the pack I think but the Archimede is an interesting shout.

Will check autotrader for mx5's too ;)

Tuna is a great suggestion as a long term keeper for sentimental reasons, I have a limited edition Golgo13 one I picked up in Japan while on honeymoon that I will not part with. Quality watch and surprisingly wearable considering the size.

Chill mate, the OP is just looking for suggestions, from a watch forum, for a potential watch purchase. No need for a forensic analysis. You simply need to relax some times. It is not all about making a point.

    For those who like closure....

A short list was given, some from my list and others from the suggestions and the Mrs and kids have chosen...

It's very nice and fits perfectly.

    Thanks for all the suggestions

Steinhart of some description. Most are sub £600.

39mm GMT’s are lovely imo and well inside your budget

Excellent choice by you and your family, a really, really good looking watch. One of those is two or three on my list but as most of my collection is made up of watches with black dials it'll have to wait for a few more.
