What would you pay for this watch...?

    Hi everyone,
I think I am about to pull the trigger on a Rolex Sea Dweller 16600 but just want to get a few opinions first!

The watch is in great condition with a full set (box, papers, swing tag etc...) and records of rolex services in 1998, 2004, 2007 and 2015. The watch is a 1991 model.

Before I go ahead with the purchase, I would just like to know what you would value this watch at in the current market to make sure I am not overpaying!

What would you pay for this watch?

Your opinions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

I bought a mint watch here getting on for a year ago for a work colleague at £5600 but can’t see much that looks spot-on for less than 7500 or so now
Considerably more in some parts of Europe

I would say maximum of £6000 from a private sale and £7000 from a dealer.

    I'd say about £6,450.

I'd be interested to know why it has been serviced so frequently and whether it is over polished as a result.

Thanks for the info everyone. The prices you have suggested are in line with what I thought so I'm happy.

Does Rolex polish at every service?

So would i. I have watches over 40 years old which have only been serviced once.

I would also find the number of services strange and slightly worrying...

I remember when these were pretty much unloved in SC. I knew I would regret not picking one up.

Regarding the service work, has it been polished each time?

Probably - unless asked not to. If the watch hasn't been overly abused then, to be fair, a polish may not be that detrimental.

Still leaves the question of the number of services.

Why question the number of services. Just a careful owner I’d expect.

When a watch leaves Rolex it is as new. Only the polishing issue to review.

I’d value the service history not be suspicious of it.

Why? Because it's extremely odd/unusual/unnecessary (in any reasonably normal circumstances) and too much attention isn't necessarily a good thing.

Serviced more or less every 5 years, which I'm guessing is what Rolex suggest, would imply a careful owner to me. Some people, ie those that don't really understand what they have on their wrist, would probably tend to follow the manufacturers guidelines, particularly with something expensive like a Rolex.

Are you suggesting Rolex servicing their own product could be in some way detrimental?

If you send your Rolex to Rolex they will service it whether it needs it or not.

When it leaves it will be as new.

A recently serviced watch is what you want when buying used.

A 1991 watch is likely to have had a tritium dial and tritium hands.
Half life of 3H is a bit over 12 years so it’s likely that Rolex replaced dial and hands in 2004 or at the following service.
    Perfectly functional, yes.
But to a collector, detrimental to the value.

Won’t be the original dial - shame

Dials arent routinely replaced, only if the owner asked for it or was offered as an option and accepted it.

Well I would say the Tritium watches would be worth more, they were made in very limited numbers before luminova became the norm, plus you might end up with a stunning patina which you wouldn’t get on a luminova watch.
