I'm actually quite hopeful for this attempt. The preview didn't really give much of anything away, but it actually looked like some genuine emotions were experienced, compared to the wooden dross seen previously. Even top gear USA felt more genuine than the recent British stuff.

I’m just hoping for a better show than in previous years, those two are funny but how good they will be at a car show remains to be seen

There is one of the issues.

It is an entertainment show, based around cars. It has not been a 'car show' for many years.

they were on the One show last night, they came across as idiots, CH looked to be cringing, PM trying to be funny, he isn't. AF is probably ok, but this isn't going to work.

Was about to post the same, it was awful and extremely awkward. Almost looked as though it was the first time they’d been together.

Completely agree about CH, staring down at the floor at some points, certainly not wanting to be sitting between those two self obsessed idiots.

Pretty much my thinking. They have to be car nuts first and funny second. Being on a car show like top gear and not being a car not (or at least having a strong interest in cars) is just retarded. CH enthusiasm about petrol (on the one show yesterday) is like many in terms of which to use, when and from where. That is a chat we have all had. The others are clueless about cars and that is why it will fail.

Such an unimaginative choice. Who's popular...??? Paddy & Freddy flintoff... they'll do.

    Bizarre really.

Flintoff can be amusing, Chris Harris likewise - but I cannot stand to see or hear Paddy McGuinness so its a huge "NO"! from me

What happened to Matt? I thought the recent season with him and Chris Harris was actually pretty good, what a shame they've gone and changed it

I don't think Le Blanc made any secret that he wasn't in it for the long haul - he missed his family and home too much.

Besides, he really can't do the stuff he does now for the money - he was being paid $1million per episode for Friends for the last few seasons, and there are 24 episodes in a season...

Well we (me, my wife and 11 yr old son - daughter not interested!), thoroughly enjoyed that!

It was good fun, and the three seemed to riff pretty well for their first outing.

Anyone else find these hypercar track segments absolutely boring now - none of the cars could be used on British roads, and they really all do look the same as each other these days.

Enjoyed TG for the first time in years. Harris is a genuine guy and have been reading and watching his cur stuff for many years, anyone who has watched a league of their own knows Freddie is funny and down to earth, paddy I'll put up with!

Seemed better chemistry etc....but very laddish! Maybe too much for the wife (she did watch it....in fact she put it on!) who used to enjoy Clarkson et al.

Paddy is a massive petrol head, owning a number of boy racer cars in the past. I haven’t watched it yet as was watching soccer aid but can see the chemistry working well.

Thought it was ace. Infectious fun and looked natural, like when top gear was at its peak in the mid noughties before everyone twigged it was scripted and staged.

Le Blanc was ok but I found Rory Reid a bit annoying with all his Americana fan boy stuff.

Looking forward to the rest of this series now.

Ditching the guest is fine by me it's almost always the worst part of the show, though I think they said there are guests next week.

The only thing to commend McGuinness by is that his first car was a mk2 Escort, other than that I was not keen at all. I cannot see any improvement on the previous bunch.

There was more chemistry between the presenters in the first 10 minutes of that episode than all of the last 4 seasons combined.

    Promising.

  29. #29
No guest and no mention of, that I can remember this morning, the tame racing driver.

A very promising start, if bordering on too laddish. No-one does performance car reviews like Harris and the 3 of them all appeared to have clicked with each other.

It was much better than I expected and I found it quite entertaining overall.

The presenters seemed to be far more natural, even if there were a few clunky moments on the scripted parts.

I am finding the 'take a cheap/odd/old/expensive/fast car to a completely inappropriate environment' running theme is becoming quite tiring now though. With that being said, I am very happy to watch it though.

I decided that I had had enough when Flintoff emerged from his car in his underpants. Kicking the little guy was not a good idea either. I'll probably try again later.

Good start, thought the three of them worked very well together.

Seems I’m in the minority but I think Paddy’s a good choice, his experience as an actor/telly person gives the presenting polish that’s required.

I find him very entertaining, but then I thought JC was hilarious as well so perhaps I’m a bit strange.

Hope it continues to do well, and we have to remember that it’s not really a car show anymore, hasn’t been for years. It’s just three blokes messing about with the odd serious car bit from Chris thrown in the mix.

Works for me, although we could scrap it and just watch more reality TV and soaps. Wouldn’t that be wonderful!

Me and boys found it a large step up from the last season and although it was laddish enjoyed it whereas with the previous season we found it boring.

Mcguinness, was a bit doubtful but the escort mk2 was his trump card, my dad had one similar albeit bright green and a 1.3 and I did exactly what he did, stick twin Weber’s on it in the hope of getting another half horsepower out of it

    It was ok.

I'm not a huge fan of the challenges/adventure things. I watched the first half and CH's review of the McLaren and Ferrari, then switched off.

I like car reviews, and CH is excellent at that. The rest I can forego.

  38. #38
Sorry, but I thought it was still a bit wooden esp. FF. Looked a little like a spare part in front of the camera at least at first.

The issue is, I think, that they are trying too hard to be like CHM, even down to picking on Harris a bit. While better than the previous couple of series, I still felt like we'd been there before. It need some original thought, not just new presenters doing the same old stuff.

I worry that they may have made a mistake by doing a special first. As most on here have already said, it was an enjoyable episode the bar has been set now as such, let’s see what the studio segments bring.

Thought it worked well, the chemistry between the 3 of them looked good and it felt natural rather than over-scripted.

I agree. I think the whole debacle should have been canned in the first place when Clarkson was booted. It was just right as it was and only BBC corporate ego has kept it lurching along.

Interesting to see so much positivity for it. Certainly not my experience of the episode. Well I say episode, I switched it off as found it awkward, trying too hard to be CHM and frankly, dull.

Won’t be bothering with it from now on. Agree with the post suggesting in being canned post CHM. I wonder how long it will remain lucrative globally for them, given it’s just a poor facsimile of what was once a great show.

I’m an outlier, I never liked Clarkson or Hammond. Watched the show last night, amazingly the wife watched it also, found it enjoyable. Might even watch it next week, which is something positive.

The presenting will polish up and ,more importantly, the chemistry seems to be there.

I found myself winding through most of it, they’re flogging horse that’s way past dead, it’s actually decomposing. I read a review that said the chemistry was better, but to me it felt like being trapped down the pub with a remarkably tedious bunch of average blokes, I just couldn’t care less any more. I like my cars and I’ll still watch the Grand Tour specials, but I don’t think I’ll be bothering with this - at least not unless there’s actually a car I’m interested in.

A bit like a travelogue (Three men in a boat sort of thing) than a car programme, but funny and quite enjoyable.

I most say the Ferrari beating the Porsche GT2RS was a bit of a shocker.

It's still a big NO from me - maybe I am getting too old for the format. I couldn't watch it all the way through, I feel it is more childish than laddish. Harris is ok and can clearly drive, Flintoff is very enthusiastic and McGuinness came over as exactly as big of an ****hole as I thought he was. Doubt I will watch another - I wasn't entertained.

PS - I realise they were in "foreign parts" in this one, but whilst we might get locked up for using a mobile phone whilst driving, the Top Gear and Grand Tour presenters quite openly have chats on their walkie talkies.

The first of the newer versions of Top Gear that I've ever managed to watch all the way through. Thought the new 'team' did a reasonable job. But I wouldn't go out of my way to watch another, the format is just far too tired now.

Next week they are testing electric cars, and I am actually really looking forward to this as I am considering going electric with my next daily driver myself.
