    Composite decking

Been mulling over what surface to put down to bridge the gap between new a new extension and the garden.

Previous sandstone slabs have not weathered well, mortar eroded and a few had started to move a little.

Not a fan of wooden decking, but then came across composite decking. Bit pricey, but certainly looks the part, lots of finishes, colours and allegedly weathers well.

Looking for any thoughts or brand suggestions, positive or negative.

    Thanks

From what I can make out there are two different 'grades' of composite decking, one is guaranteed for 10 years, the other for 25.

I looked into it and even got a sample sent from Trex who were highly recommended https://uk.trex.com/

Unfortunately it was just too expensive as we plan to move in about two years, we were quoted around £5k fitted but I replaced the old stuff with new softwood (Guaranteed 15 years ) for less than £1k

I’ve got Howdens grey composite and it’s great. Thought it would be slippery when wet as there’s not much grain but it works really well in all weathers.

Thanks for the replies, I’ll check out the brands mentioned.

Looking at some pics and it does look very nice, although not cheap.

My dad just had trex fitted by an approved installer. It’s very nice indeed and feels good under feet but it was £10k for his.

A friend has grey composite decking. Not sure of the make or cost but it looks great.

I'm not a fan of softwood decking - from experience it's too slippy when wet - or frosty - and needs a good deal of maintenance. I wouldn't have it again, but would consider the composite.

Just a warning with Composite decking. It does get very hot in the summer. Its not very animal or children friendly!

Had a very small area done last year, the guy installed me Trex, said it was a bit more to buy, but in the long run worth every penny.

Thanks for your thoughts, didn’t think about the heat aspect.

Might a bonus if it keeps the dog away from the sausages!

I had a load of this installed about 2 months ago. It seemed superb at the time, but within a month of sunshine, the lovely two-tone woodgrain effect, (the reason we chose it over more bland competitors) has completely faded back to single tone. It looks rather dull now. Bit disappointed but not a lot I imagine can be done about it.

Here with an offcut that'd been in the garage.

    Wow, that’s a big difference.

    Still looks good though!
