Can anyone identify this plant please?

The wife stuck this in the garden and insists that it will produce edible berries of some kind but she can’t explain to me what they will be. The wife is Thai, so while she understands what she’s trying to explain to me, I haven’t got a clue what she’s on about.

Has she really planted it in the middle of the lawn or is it still in its pot?

Looks like a Blackcurrant or Redcurrant to me.

It looks like Viburnum opulus (Guelder rose)? The berries are pretty foul though and need to be cooked with tons of sugar so not exactly an edible fruit bush.

It can grow quite big as well, up to 4-5m either way.

    EDIT: Actually, blackcurrant's more likely.

This - it’s a berry of some sort. They look similar, so won’t know until it fruits but could be blackcurrant, red, loganberry, raspberry possibly - something of that ilk

Yes, if that’s an ornamental lawn will look odd, especially in Winter.
Agree with other posters that it’s a black/red currant.

Yes, straight in the lawn. She had it in the back garden but they were where it is is soon to be patio so she wanted it moved to the front lawn.

It’s either black or red current plant, more likely red current given very light green leaves colour.

PS can you ask your Mrs to find an image of the berries on the internet or something?

I had a blossom tree planted in the middle of my lawn but never a berry The blossom tree I really loved but my wife never did as I came back from work one day and she had hacked it down.

She just showed me this photo and said these are the berries it will/should have.

    red current, you'll need sugar.

The plant won't look great in winter. They get a bit woody too if I remember rightly, so it'll need pruning.

Wife loves red currents and we have a couple of very large bushes, once they ripen if she can get to them before the birds she will eat the lot!!! Quite sharp, think sharper than black current but eatable without sweetning.

You won't get many this year as they would have been forming by now. I have whitecurrants at home, which are less visible to the birds and they still take most of them.

Do you get male and female plants? Is there any way to tell them apart (other than lack of fruit)? Do you need any specific polinator plant nearby?
