Everyone likes Tombstone, including me. Kurt Russell plays a mean Wyatt Earp.

I'm not a Western fan but The Culpepper Cattle Company is a good story.
    Cheers,

Two of my favourites, and you'll struggle to find two more contrasting films about the same theme, the Gold Rush..

McCabe & Mrs Miller (1971) ... The most realistic portrayal of life at the time i've ever seen in a western, a dark brooding epic of a film, don't expect sunshine and roses.. also starring Julie Christie, directed by Robert Altman and music by Leonard Cohen, what more do you need ..

An excellent Guardian review from 1999. https://www.theguardian.com/culture/.../artsfeatures1

And Paint Your Wagon, for pure and simple hokum entertainment value.

Without a doubt The Wild Bunch

Peckinpah's use of very rapid edits and slo-mo in the signature shoot outs created something almost balletic. This film and the slightly earlier Bonnie and Clyde introduced a new level of graphic violence in film.

Rio Bravo could join the list, as it is quite emblematic of a certain type of western.

Never really liked western films very much, but I was a real fan of 60s and 70s western TV series when I was a nipper - The Virginian, Rifleman, Bonanza, High Charparal, Alias Smith and Jones, Laramie, Wild, Wild West. Maverick, Rawhide (Clint again), Wagon Train, etc.

I don't know if I can narrow it down! I used to watch loads of westerns when I was a kid!

UNforgiven is in there,as well as Pale Rider,TGTBATU,A Fistful of Dollars,For A Few Dollars More,True Grit,How The West Was Won,Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid,High Plains Drifter,Josey Wales,3:10 To Yuma,Magnificent 7,The Wild Bunch,Once Upon A Time In The West,Winchester 73 and High Noon.

I would also chuck The Hateful Eight,The Revenant and Possibly Django Unchained.

    Too many to choose from!

Used to watch loads of them with my dad when i was a kid so have a soft spot for lots of the old westerns and thoroughly enjoyed the remake of True Grit by the Coen brothers.

    Some great films already mentioned.
I would add Red River, Hombre, and one you may have missed, Lawman, Burt Lancaster, Lee J Cobb, Robert Ryan. Dir by Michael Winner.

Many good suggestions so far - odd to see that Shane only gets one mention...

Does this count as a western ?

    Well worth a viewing IMHO.

Old Jimmy Stewart westerns were great-The man from Laramie and Who shot Liberty Valance my favourites.
Tombstone,Unforgiven and The Outlaw Josey Wales are favourites among the more modern stuff.
The snake oil salesman in Josey Wales is how I imagine the odd seller on Sales Corner.

Many good westerns mentioned and as an Eastwood fan I thought Unforgiven and Outlaw Josey Wales were brilliant. True Grit, the Lancaster/Douglas Gunfight at the OK Coral and The Big Country were also great westerns, especially the latter with Charlton Heston playing a bad(ish) guy.

As my name coinsides with the film of the same title, I was always a bit shy of watching it and as a youngster thought it was a bit corny and grating with Joey Starrett calling 'Come back Shane' at the end. It was only when I was older and had an appreciation for cinema and movie making that I realised just how good the film was. Made almost 70 years ago there are many subtleties in the film that make it stand out. I believe it was the first western to show someone kill another person in cold blood - when Jack Wilson kills 'Stonewall' after he has already lowered his gun in submission. The way the impact of the round shoots him backwards instead of him just seizing up and dropping as in normal westerns (the same would happen when Shane kills Wilson at the end). Palance was definitely the coldest, coolest badguy in any western I've seen and a great actor in his own right. The final shootout at the end - I'm sure Eastwood drew inspiration from this for Unforgiven. So I would have to say that Shane is my favourite western.

    So no one remembers;
    Little Big Man
    Soldier Blue
    A Man Called Horse

And Rio Lobo with one of the funniest lines in a straight cowboy fillum,

Shasta : What am I doing here?

Cord McNally : Well, you fainted after you shot Whitey, so we put you to bed.

Shasta : Wait a minute! Where are my clothes? Which one of you took my clothes?

    Cordona : I did.

    Shasta : Why?

Cordona : Well, we flipped a coin and I won!

I think I'm probably the wrong generation for "classic" westerns but I've dipped my toe in the genre.

We recently saw The Ballad of Lefty Brown which was excellent, but I've been back to 3:10 to Yuma (the 2007 remake) a few times, can't fault that one.

There's a fine little known Dean Martin western 'whodunnit' called '5 card stud'. It's a hidden treasure with a cool title song sung by Dean.

I was a kid when Westerns were on TV all the time and as my dad like them we watched a lot of them. Although a lot have blended due to the passage time so a lot of my favourites are more modern. And Clint Eastwood gets a lot of mentions. As does James Stewart.

    Unforgiven
    The Outlaw Josey Wales
    Pale Rider
    High Plains Drifter
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
    The Magnificent Seven
The Shootist - nice take on a western setting it towards the end of the wild west.
    How the West Was Won
    Shenandoah
    Winchester ’73

    And for a laugh
    Blazing Saddles
    Paint Your Wagon

Incredibly there's only one mention here for Two Mules for Sister Sarah. Amazing western.

Votes here for Unforgiven and all the Leone films.

Outlaw Josey Wales is my all time favourite movie, so also my favourite Western (and I love Westerns).

Others in my top 5 are already mentioned; Unforgiven, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, Wild Bunch, Once Upon a Time in the West.

Lots of other goods shouts in this thread as well.
