After I scarified I had a little cry, and once I had finally run out of tears, I ordered a big bag of topsoil, 12kg of seed and proceeded to level with top soil, aerated with a fork and loosened soil a little in the process, sowed and fertilised, thin layer of top soil over seed, rollered and watered every day for a week. Since then the rain, temp and sunshine has worked its magic.

    Any recommendations for fertiliser?

I just used a regular weed and feed (Aftercut), once when I sowed and again today.

Apologies if this is a stupid question, but can any garden experts here recommend me some weed control fabric that actually works?

Have a few decent sized graveled areas in my back garden with various types of supposed heavy duty fabric underneath, and the buggers still get through. Sick of having to weed these supposed low maintenance areas!

I thought it was a case of seeds being blown in from above and then sprouting as opposed to actually growing through the membrane.

You could be right with the smaller stuff, they seem to be growing on it rather than through. but there are definitely some that I’ve pulled out that were coming through it.

Just wondered if some particular brands/types are better than the generic stuff you get

My garden! is grass and some trees. Anything else that grows. I try to kill it to prevent more work on my part

The little garden pit in front of the porch has a mini hedge and plastic flowers which are very easy upkeep and I don't need to kill them.

I wasn’t happy where you could see the frame under the decking where it met the pond so I had a sheet of mirrored acrylic made up.

Brilliant, simply brilliant. Was it difficult to get it square, so that the angle of the water surface doesn't 'ascent' or 'descent' in the reflection?

    Thankyou

I attached the acrylic directly to the decking frame that was already square so it is level going into the water. The light weight of the 3mm acrylic and no risk of cracking also meant it was easy to fit.

March up until today. There are still a few spots I have to sort out where there are still weeds and poor growth through moss but I think in another four weeks it will be sorted. Until next year

Please post a pic from the other side, like the first picture: the view will be extra nice with this green lawn!

The local treeworker came round with a gigantic Valtra tractor + stub grinder for the removal (disappearance is a better word!) of 5 stubs. Done under 20 mins. From where I stood to take the pic: that was as close as I dared to approach...

Humble? But a complete world to discover for young Neo! Flowers, chicken coop, swing. That garden ticks all the boxes when you have a young child!

This is mine today after a few weeks of lawn care and a few hours trimming some bushes, re-applying barn paint to the home gym/pilates studio a few weeks ago and mowing and edging the lawn.

Looks great. I have a really stupid question re fire pits without grates. How do you clean the ashes out - just a dust pan and shovel ? The ones I looked at had a grate so the ashes fell through into a pan to be removed

Yep, just a brush, dustpan and usually a small shovel.

Looking good! I'm under instruction to provide a similar erection next year.

Are the uprights attached to the slabs, or just resting on? I guess it's sturdy/heavy enough for the latter?

I was limited on height of posts due to step up and patio doors having clearance.

Ended up cutting out, digging and setting four concrete bases for the posts to sit on. They sit only 2” down from patio slab, and the concrete surround has now formed up the structure re any possible swaying.

Was thinking of pinning with L brackets the posts and screwing into base and post, but instead I’m hoping the weight will be sufficient to keep it from lifting!

Ah, good job. I'm probably going to be slabbing at the same time, so will likely set the posts then build around.

Is it sandstone slabs you've got?

We've been battling to keep our looking nice. The black suffers terribly with going grey.

Found some sealant stuff that seems to be working OK, how long it'll last remains to be seen.

In our part of the world any fire pit will start to resemble your moniker within a few weeks - which is no bad thing - but also hold a puddle of water. Friends of ours drilled a drainage hole into the centre, while we opt to keep ours in the shed when not in use. Fabulous feature for summer nights, though I strongly recommend kiln dried logs to minimise the smoke.
    Enjoy
